Area athletes capture 4 championships at Warsaw Regional

WARSAW — Leah Heckaman gave herself a bit of a scare Tuesday night.
Coming into the discus finals at the Warsaw Girls Track and Field Sectional, the Culver Girls Academy sophomore’s best throw of the night was only good enough for fourth place, one shy of state qualification.
Luckily for her, she saved her best for last.

LAKEVILLE — The old saying holds that the third time’s the charm.
Plymouth couldn’t argue with that Tuesday.
Marissa Sullivan and battery mate Emilee Keilman both cranked out two-run homers in Plymouth’s third time through the order, and the Lady Pilgrims used a four-run fifth to snap a 0-0 stalemate en route to a 6-2 defeat of John Glenn in Class 3A St. Joseph’s Softball Sectional action at Newton Park.
Plymouth advances to the semifinals to play Jimtown tonight at 7 p.m. following a game between host St. Joe and Culver Girls Academy.

Lions invited to Colts Horseshoe Classic

BREMEN — The Indianapolis Colts have invited the Bremen High School football team to play in the Horseshoe Classic at Lucas Oil Stadium Saturday, Aug. 25.

CGA advances, Plymouth bows out at tennis regional
Culver Girls Academy advanced to the championship of its home tennis regional with a 5-0 win over Manchester, while Plymouth bowed out of the state tournament with a close 3-2 defeat at the hands of Northern Lakes Conference rival Warsaw at the CGA Girls Tennis Regional Tuesday.
CGA and Warsaw will face off in the tournament’s final tonight at 5:15 p.m.

County announces increased patrols for holiday weekend

MARSHALL CO. — The Marshall County D.U.I. Task Force has announced its intention to step up patrols for the Memorial Day weekend. Officers from multiple agencies throughout Marshall County will be out in full force all weekend looking for impaired drivers. Officers would like to remind the citizens to please drink responsibly and be safe this holiday weekend. Citizens are encouraged to report possible impaired drivers to the Marshall County Police Department at 574-936-3187.

Laurent discusses development issues

PLYMOUTH — Marshall County has a lot of land available to companies, but not many suitable buildings. This is a problem, according to Marshall County Economic Development directer Jennifer Laurent.
“Seventy-five to 80 percent of inquires we get are about existing buildings,” said Laurent to Marshall County commissioners Monday in their regularly scheduled meeting.

Student begins community project for MCNC

PLYMOUTH — Anya Hettich, an eighth grader at Lincoln Jr. High School, recently conducted a community service project at the school that she hopes will continue for the next several years. After attending a sports leadership camp last summer, Hettich was on the hunt to find a volunteer project. She settled on the Marshall County Neighborhood Center as a recipient after speaking with MCNC director Sara Hill about the Center’s need for clothes — especially of the trendy, teen variety.

PLYMOUTH — Mary Ann Rankin, 94, of 635 Oakhill Ave., Plymouth, died at 12:55 p.m. Sunday, May 20, 2012, at Miller's Merry Manor, in Plymouth.
She is survived by her husband, George L. Rankin of Plymouth; daughter, Karen Roush of Mishawaka; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 W. Madison St., Plymouth is handling the arrangements. There will be no services.

SHIPSHEWANA — Thomas T. Winquist, 71, of Shipshewana, died Monday, May 21, 2012 at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
Mr. Winquist was born July 7, 1940 in Logansport, to Roy and Alice (Kiger) Winquist.
Mr. Winquist was a welder and groomed horses.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary Beatrice of Phoenix, Ariz., Andrea Winquist of Flora, and Teresa Lovell of South Bend; two grandchildren; a sister, Mary Ellen Franklin of Stuart, Fla.; and a brother, Richard Winquist of Shipshewana.
