ARGOS — Mary L. Hooker, 80, of Argos died Aug. 9, 2012 at 11:05 a.m. at Indiana University Health – Goshen Hospital following a short illness.
She was born Dec. 25, 1931 in Culver to Roy E. and Ethel L. (Stevenson) Overmyer. She lived all of her life in the Argos community.
Feb. 25, 1953 in Argos she married Richard “Dick” G. Hooker; he preceded her Dec. 9, 1996.
Mary worked for the Argos community school as the cafeteria director for 27 years, retiring in 2001.
Mary is a graduate of Argos High School class of 1950.

Uceny tripped up in Olympic finals

Years from now, after all this running business is over, you have to hope Morgan Uceny will look back on her athletic career and understand what an amazing young lady she really was.
You have to hope she will remember the summer of 2012 as the time when she excited and united her hometown of Plymouth like few people have ever managed to do. You have to hope she will realize how she inspired youngsters and had hometown pride popping buttons off the seniors.
You have to hope.

Uceny falls in Olympic finals

LONDON — Poised on the edge of history, Morgan Uceny was tripped up in the final lap of the women's 1500-meter finals at the London Olympics Friday.
European champion Alsi Cakir Alptekin, who served a two-year suspension for doping after the 2004 world junior championships, won the gold medal in 4 minutes, 10.23 seconds, and Gamze Bulut took silver in 4:10.40. Two-time world champion Maryam Jamal of Bahrain won the bronze medal in 4:10.74.

Uceny trips on last lap

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth native Morgan Uceny tripped on the last lap of the women's 1500 meter race in the Olympic finals today, to the dismay of a large group gathered in the Plymouth High School auditorium to watch the event live and cheer her on.
Erica McIntire and her 7-year-old daughter Mallory were among those present who expressed disappointment the unexpected turn of events.
"She's still a hero in our eyes, because just to make it (to the Olympics) is a huge accomplishment!" said McIntire.

CULVER — Albert Arthur Joseph Paré (1925-2012) was born in Lawrence, Mass. Aug, 10, 1925 to Antonio and Laura Paré. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1943, and he enlisted in the United States Navy in November of the same year. He served honorably as a medic in the U.S. Navy and Marines in World War II.

PLYMOUTH — Former Muncie resident Betty Hayden, 77, passed away, Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012 at her home in Plymouth where she lived for the last eight years.
She was born in Wakefield, Ohio, the daughter of Langley and Alka Slusher and graduated from Royerton High School.
Betty worked for Waterfield Mortgage as a loan closing secretary and retired after many years of service.
She loved the Lord and was a faithful servant being baptized last year in Connecticut. Her other loves included her grandchildren and the Indiana Pacers.

BREMEN — Nored F. Schlarb, 94, of Bremen, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Wakarusa.
She is survived by a daughter, Kay (Ron) Holmes of Bremen; a son, Tom (Susan) Schlarb of Bremen; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a brother and sister, David Hathaway and Val June Schafer both of Lakeville.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012 at 10 a.m. at St. John United Church of Christ in Woodland with burial following the service at St. John Cemetery in Woodland.

Second Friday events canceled

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Chamber of Commerce Second Friday “Summer Fiesta” Event is canceled for tonight. The PR/Tourism Committee felt in honor of Morgan Uceny running the Olympic 1500 meter Women’s Finals Friday, the community should support by cheering her race on. She races in the final at an estimated time of 3:55 p.m. Friday live on NBColympics.com.
