PLYMOUTH — The collapse of a culvert has caused the closing of Olive Trail
Monday afternoon the Marshall County Commissioners issued an emergency declaration closing Olive Trail one half mile south of Overmyer Drive. Olive Trail collapsed around the Dixon Lake outlet pipe running underneath the road, and the road is impassable.
The area of the collapse had been a problem area for county repair crews.

ARGOS — After an hour and a half and 17 words spelled correctly, Holly Rowe was named the champion speller at the 29th Annual Marshall County Spelling Bee.
The event was held in Argos High School Monday night. This was the fourth year that Rowe had qualified for the county event, but her first championship.
Coming in second was eighth grader Lucy Battersby of St. Michael School in Plymouth. Battersby made her third appearance after winning in her home school. She was also the second place winner in last year’s event.

DONALDSON — Sister Clarence Caspermeyer, PHJC, 80, of Donaldson, died May 1, 2011 at Catherine Kasper Home, Donaldson.
Visitation will take place at 4:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 3 at Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Catherine Kasper Home, Donaldson.
Burial will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Donaldson.

Jack Grimmett
Oct. 8, 1926 — April 30, 2011
BEAVER DAM, Ky. — Jack Grimmett, 84, of Beaver Dam, Ky. died Saturday April 30, 2011 at his home.Â
He was born in Crichton, W.V. Oct. 8, 1926, to the late Everet Guy and Elisabeth Wheeler Grimmett. He was a truck driver for Gary Transfer, served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, received a Purple Heart when his ship the USS Bush sank, was a member of the DAV, American Legion Post, and also enjoyed fishing and yard work.
LAKEVILLE — Sitting out with a broken arm, Mike Childs could do little but cheer his teammates on to the title at last year’s Lancer Relays.
Not to worry.
The John Glenn senior sprinter made up for lost time Monday, powering the Falcons to four wins on the night and a sixth straight title at the LaVille relay meet.
“It’s the best feeling in the world,” said a smiling Childs. “It was the worst last year; I had to sit on the sidelines and just watch and cheer on my teammates and now I’m able to help them out and do everything I could to help them get the victory. It feels awesome.”

A little over three years ago, Lee Willhite and family opened Gladie’s Deli in downtown Culver. Now the restaurant is moving closer to home for Willhite, but also hopefully closer to where traffic from Culverites and visitors flows: 415 Lake Shore Drive, just a block west of the town park and public beach (on the east end of the building perhaps best known as the former home of City Tavern/Diner), and literally right across the street from the Willhite family’s home.

PLYMOUTH — Athletes were preparing Saturday at Lincoln Junior High School for a very special competition that will take place Saturday, May 7 at Culver Military Academy’s track field. Adults from the Marshall-Starke Special Olympics team were practicing their individual sport and setting their best times for the upcoming competition.
Each will compete in several events ranging from running long jump, relays, javelin throw, shot put, softball throw, and 400-meter walk, to name a few. Those 30 and older will also compete in Bocce.

PLYMOUTH — Rebuilding Together of Marshall County and Lowe’s teamed up to make needed repairs on homes for local residents Saturday. They joined with groups all over the country where some 3,500 homes were slated for work.
Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation donated a $5,000 grant to help fund the projects. This year, volunteers were from First United Methodist Church, Blueberry Festival board, Trinity United Methodist Church, CentryLink employees, Plymouth Church of the Brethren and Evangelical Covenant Church.

WINONA LAKE — E. Lunetta Metcalf, 97, of Winona Lake, formerly of North Webster, died at 4:14 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2011 at Grace Village Retirement in Winona Lake.
She is survived by a son, Philip (Karilyn) Metcalf of North Webster; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, Edythe Gordon of Fort Wayne.
Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 2 at Owen Family Funeral Home, S.R. 13 and 500 N, North Webster.
