Culverâ€™s VFW Post 6919, as well as its Ladiesâ€™ and Mensâ€™ Auxiliaries, observed the occasion at the Masonic cemetery in Culver. Culverâ€™s fire department and EMS also took part, and Post Commander Bryce Lindvall discussed the origins of the holiday (as â€śDecoration Dayâ€ť following the Civil War), in addition to a flag burning ceremony and 21-gun salute.
Culver's Kiwanis Club gathered Thursday evening to fete local students, an outstanding area business, and an outstanding citizen from its own ranks, in addition to inducting new members Charlotte Hahn and Paul Liette.
At the Mystic Hills-based event, catered by Culver Coffee Company, Kiwanian Dick Swennumson introduced members of the Oliver family of Plymouth's Oliver Ford Lincoln-Mercury, recipients of special recognition by the Club, by noting the business "has helped our community for over seven decades."
Joshua Hunnicutt, 30, of Winamac, turned himself in to the Starke County Sheriff's Department earlier today.
Hunnicutt turned himself in at about 12:50 p.m. He told officers that he realized he would get caught eventually, and that he had made a bad decision. Hunnicutt said he has no recollection about what took place prior to his escape.
Hunnicutt went over a fence in the recreation yard at the jail Wednesday evening, May 23 at around 4 p,m, and headed south down the alley.
CULVER â€” Coming into the Trojansâ€™ Sectional 51 game against Marquette Catholic, Triton head coach Jim Shively had a hunch the outcome would hinge on his playersâ€™ performance at the plate.
The Trojans put up 13 hits and capitalized on some wild pitching by the Blazers to win in a five-inning runs-ahead rule diming, 21-11 at the Culver Community Sectional Friday.
ARGOS â€” Argos standout Patric Shei has signed his letter of intent to play as a midfielderÂ for the Ancilla soccer squad starting this fall.
â€śPatric is a great addition to next yearâ€™s team,â€ť Ancilla Assistant soccer coach Kirk Weiss said. â€śHeâ€™s a local kid from a soccer program with a lot of history.â€ť
PLYMOUTH â€” Plymouth High Schoolâ€™s Brittany Himes has signed on with Ancilla Womenâ€™s Basketball for the 2012-13 season.
â€śBrittany is a good pick up for us,â€ť said Ancilla head coach Stephanie Beason. â€śSheâ€™s a very heady player and does a lot of the little things on the court. Sheâ€™s also a good role model in the community.â€ť
Himes scored 31 points in her senior season with the Lady Pilgrims and works at the Boys and Girls Club of Plymouth in her spare time.
PLYMOUTH â€” Plymouth senior golfer Mandy McPherron recently signed on to play golf at Trine University. Trine is an NCAA Division III competitor located in Angola. The Thunder wrapped up the fall season with a sixth place finish in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings. Trine played host to the NCAA DIII National Womenâ€™s Golf National Championships May 8-11, the first time the school had ever hosted an NCAA national championship event.

PLYMOUTH â€”Â Lisa Milam, former quality control manager of Stone Creek Homes, said Friday afternoon that she received a call that payroll is being run for the currently-closed Plymouth facility. She said Stone Creek Homes' employees should all be paid by Tuesday.

PLYMOUTH â€” Stone Creek Homes shut down unexpectedly yesterday morning, laying off all employees in both their Plymouth and Nebraska plants.
The Stone Creek Homes Nebraska branch's quality control manager, Tracey Shippley, said that employees were called into a meeting with CFO Alan Donohue yesterday morning where they were abruptly told that the plant would be closing.
"(Donohue) just said, we are closing the plant, we don't have the funds â€” the money is gone and we don't have money to make payroll," said Shippley Friday.

PLYMOUTH â€”Â Karl Olson, 92, of Plymouth, died at 8:10 a.m.Thursday in the Bremen Healthcare Center.
Visitation will be held at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 29. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the St. Michael Catholic Church, Plymouth.

CULVER â€” Jenny Margot Reid, 64, of Culver, died at 12:45 a.m. Thursday in the Hospice House of St. Joseph County.
