PLYMOUTH — It always feels pretty rewarding when a coach can send one of his players on to the next level. When it’s to that coach’s own alma mater, it can be pretty special.
Plymouth basketball coach Ryan Bales got to pass the torch to one of his Pilgrims last Friday as David Lee signed on to play basketball at Bethel College.
Baseball
Lions top Westview in 8 for sectional title
Three days after the Bremen softball team earned a sectional title at Westview, the Lions baseball team followed suit with a thrilling 8-7 sectional championship win in eight innings over the host Warriors at the Class 2A Westview Baseball Sectional Monday.
The two teams were locked in a 5-5 tie at the end of regulation before Westview jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Norma Jean Daugherty
March 16, 1931 - May 24, 2013
PLYMOUTH — Norma Jean Daugherty, 82, a Plymouth resident since 1956, passed away in Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth, on Friday, May 24, 2013 following a brief illness.
Born March 16, 1931, in Sharon, Pa., she was the daughter of Harry and Martha (Jones) Reiter.
She graduated from Sharon High School with the class of 1950, and attended accounting classes at Shenango Valley Institute, now Penn State’s Sharon campus.
Ivan David ‘Ike’ Amor
Aug. 1, 1936-May 23, 2013
LAKEVILLE — Ivan David “Ike” Amor, 76, passed away at 12:40 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013 at the Pilgrim Manor, Plymouth. Ike was born Aug. 1, 1936 in Plymouth to the late Lester Arnold and Rosa Gladys (Miller) Amor. Ike was raised in Donaldson and lived there for 22 years, lived in Teegarden for one year and has spent the last 53 years as a resident of Lakeville. On Jan. 24, 1959 in Marshall County, he was united in marriage to Laura Maxine Snyder who survives.
Orefeise M. Thayer
July 28, 1922 - May 23, 2013
PLYMOUTH — Orefeise M. Thayer, 90, passed away from natural causes, in the Catherine Kasper Life Center, where she had been a resident since February of 2011, at 4:50 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013.
Born in Hartford, Conn. on July 28, 1922, Orefeise was the daughter of Peter A. and Ernestine O. Hudon.
She graduated from Plymouth High School with the class of 1940.
On Oct. 20, 1946, in Plymouth, Orefeise and William G. Thayer were married. After 46 years of marriage, William died in April of 1992.
Guadalupe R. Vasquez

HARLINGEN, Texas — Guadalupe R. Vasquez, 82, passed away Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Harlingen Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt. She will be remembered for her joyfulness, love for dancing, visiting with friends. She loved to wash dishes and stay busy with household chores and she would never miss her favorite Mexican Novelas. She retired from Pilgrim Farms after more than 20 years.

SOUTH BEND — Joshua David Whitaker, 30, of South Bend died Wednesday, May 22, 2013.
He is survived by his daughter, Peyton Whitaker of Fort Wayne; his father, Kenneth Whitaker of Bremen; six siblings, Stephanie Whitaker Hale, Dustin Whitaker, Bryan Whitaker, Aaron Whitaker all of South Bend, Ashley Whitaker of Winamac, Riley Whitaker of Argos; and a maternal grandfather, Austin Sizemore.

NEW YORK, NY — Plymouth Olympian Morgan Uceny will run in the 1500 meters today at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York City. TV coverage is to be live on NBC from 1 to 3 p.m. EST.
Having begun her training three months later than usual, Uceny is not expecting to win at today’s race but is instead hoping to hit a target time. After the race’s conclusion she will fly back to Louborough, England, where she now lives and trains before traveling to Rome to compete on June 6.
CULVER — With the rest of their team now out of the state tournament, Andria Shook and Marissa German are happy to carry the banner for Plymouth.
The Lady Pilgrims may have been eliminated from the team tennis tournament via a disappointing 3-2 decision to their repeat regional champion hosts at the Culver Girls Academy Regional championship Wednesday night, but Shook and German remained unbeaten in the tournament to stay alive in the IHSAA’s 23rd Annual Doubles Tournament.
Softball
Lady Trojans win Sectional 51 title
Mallorie Jennings fanned 10 while allowing just one earned run in a complete seven-inning outing inside the circle, and Triton racked up 12 hits as the Lady Trojans brought home just the second softball sectional championship in school history with a 10-5 victory over Westville at the Class A South Central (Union Mills) Sectional Friday night.
