Ancilla soccer clinches home field with 2 shutouts

DONALDSON — The Ancilla College men’s soccer team closed out its regular season with a pair of shutouts, defeating visiting Lakeland Community College 1-0 on Saturday and Delta College 5-0 on Sunday.
In doing so, the Chargers (9-6-1, 9-6-1 Region 12) clinched the fourth seed in the NJCAA Region 12 tournament and have earned the right to host the opening round Wednesday against fifth-seeded Muskegon Community College.

Plymouth beats CGA, falls to St. Joe at volleyball sectional

PLYMOUTH — Close, but no cigar.
The Lady Pilgrims reached the championship at their home Class 3A Plymouth Sectional with a four-game win over Culver Girls Academy but fell short of the crown with a loss in another four-gamer against South Bend St. Joseph’s Saturday.
ST. JOSEPH’S 3, PLYMOUTH 1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23)
St. Joe unseated five-time defending champion Mishawaka Marian in the morning, then held off a surging Plymouth squad for the title in four back-and-forth sets in the sectional finale at The Rock, 25-22, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23.

Plymouth’s Jordan Knapp recorded 7.5 tackles, three interceptions, 15 rushing yards, three PATs and a touchdown in Plymouth’s sectional win at Angola Friday.

Bethany beats Dragons 8-0 at LaVille boys semistate

LAKEVILLE — The first time the two teams played, Femi Hollinger-Janzen wasn’t as much of an issue. At Saturday’s LaVille Boys Soccer Semistate, he took control.
The Indiana University recruit and Bethany Christian senior forward notched four goals within the first 22 minutes to give his team a 5-0 lead, then watched from the sidelines as Class A No. 3 Bethany coasted to an 8-0 semifinal win over Argos at Newton Park.
The Bruins ultimately lost the semistate championship to Fort Wayne Canterbury.

Argos girls finish strong at semistate

ARGOS — Same score, different game.
No. 5-ranked Mishawaka Marian beat No. 14 Argos 3-1 in the semifinal on the way to the championship at the Argos Girls Soccer Semistate Saturday before winning the tournament with a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 2-rated West Lafayette.

Falcons put past behind in first-round rout

WALKERTON — The painful memories of last week's tough loss to Bremen quickly disappeared Friday night for the John Glenn High football team.
Josh Anderson ran the opening kickoff back 41 yards and then proceeded to ramble 40 more for the first of his four touchdowns, allowing Glenn to cruise to a 51-6 victory over Hammond Gavit in Class 3-A Sectional 17 opening round action at a frigid Falcon Field.

ANGOLA – Throughout the regular season, the Plymouth football team struggled under adversity.
In Friday’s sectional contest at Angola, the Rockies responded when it mattered most.
Plymouth battled back from a 14-0 deficit in the first quarter and capitalized with scores on each of eight Angola turnovers on its way to a 49-21 victory in a wild Class 4A Sectional 11 opener.

PLYMOUTH — New Prairie’s stout defense made Plymouth earn it, but the Lady Pilgrims rose to the occasion.
Plymouth battled back from a 25-11 loss in the opening set to hand the Lady Cougars a four-set defeat, 11-25, 25-23, 25-18, 26-24, in a scrappy Class 3A Plymouth Sectional quarterfinal Thursday at The Rock.
The Pilgrims now move on to face Culver Girls Academy — which bested Jimtown in three games in the opening quarterfinal Thursday — in the late semifinal at the Plymouth tourney Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Eagles play smart in 3-game win over Jimtown

PLYMOUTH — In the midst of Thursday’s sectional quarterfinal, Culver Girls Academy teammates Katy Bjornson and Abby Jeffirs got a little friendly competition going.
The outside hitters had a contest to see who could rack up the most kills, and while Bjornson edged out Jeffirs 13 kills to 12, both were winners as they helped lead the Lady Eagles to a convincing three-set win over Jimtown, 25-20, 25-12, 25-14 at the Class 3A Plymouth Sectional.
