January 7, 2012

LAKEVILLE — With leading scorer Ethan Pike sitting out the game with family issues, Bremen’s offense struggled Friday night.
LaVille held the Lions to 11 of 33 from the field and their lowest points production of the season as the Lancers grabbed their first Northern State Conference win with a 45-27 defeat of the visiting Lions at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium.

Pilgrims fall at Elkhart Memorial, 57-52

January 7, 2012

ELKHART — The Plymouth boys basketball team has seen some good opposing guards this season already, but they may have seen one of the best Friday night.
Elkhart Memorial’s Todd Johnson was nearly unstoppable at Elkhart’s North Side Gym and the Pilgrims weren’t able to overcome an early deficit in a losing effort against the Chargers, 57-52.
Johnson finished the night with 33 points, making 12 of his 17 shots from the floor even with one and sometimes two Pilgrim defenders guarding him.

WALKERTON — Triton’s girls basketball team churned out a couple of big numbers that mitigated a small one Friday night.
The Class A No. 5 Trojans ripped down 26 offensive rebounds, forced 24 turnovers, and overcame a 26-percent performance from the field — 16 of 61 — en route to a 40-27 Northern State Conference win over John Glenn at The Aerie.
For the game, Triton, which snapped a three-game skid, piled up 20 second-chance points and 17 points off turnovers, while holding the Falcons to a mere 21 tries from the field.

HAMLET — With senior Katie Schwenk out of the lineup at church camp, Oregon-Davis junior reserve Lincy Jones turned a corner filling her shoes at the Hanover Central Tournament last week.
And while the Lady Bobcats may have fallen short at that tourney’s championship, Schwenk’s absence at Hanover Central may have paid dividends for OD against its Sectional 51 rivals Wednesday.

Lady Pilgrims win at sectional foe New Prairie

January 5, 2012

NEW CARLISLE — Winning on the road is always good. When it’s a sectional opponent at the site of the sectional, it’s even better.
In a possible Class 3A Sectional 19 preview, the Plymouth Lady Pilgrims pulled away in the second half to get the victory at New Prairie, 48-38.
Plymouth found offensive production that it hadn’t seen in the season so far as it snapped a three-game skid. The Lady Pilgrims had three players in double digits, led by juniors Amber Redinger and Lauren Tanner with 14 points each, followed closely by freshman Haley Harrell with 10.

Bremen beats Bruins, 59-45

January 4, 2012

BREMEN — Coming off a two-week holiday layover, the Lions got off to a bit of a slow start Tuesday.
Once they shook off the rust, however, they took over.
After surrendering a 4-0 game-opening run by visiting Bethany Christian, Bremen locked in to hold the Bruins scoreless from the field for more than six minutes, grabbing a 10-point, 15-5 lead in the process. Bethany responded with a run of its own in the second quarter, but the Lions answered back and never trailed after the 2:30 mark of the first in a 59-45 win at home.
