BOURBON — After a mere one-point decision to Triton Saturday, Culver head coach Kyle Elliott expected his players to start with some confidence Tuesday.
Instead, Culver put up just two points in the first quarter as the Class A No. 7 Trojans jumped out to an 8-2 lead at the break. The two teams went back and forth the rest of the night, but Culver was never able to get out in front, and Triton polished off 12 of 17 freebies in the final frame as the Cavs tried to stretch the clock, handing the challengers a 46-33 loss in a boys Bi-County opener at The Trojan Trench.
BOURBON — Sometimes it’s better to be wrong.
Triton head coach Adam Heckaman had a presentiment before his girls’ Bi-County opener with Culver Tuesday that his girls may not have been focused on the task at hand.
The Class A No. 6 Lady Trojans coughed up 15 first half turnovers to surrender a 10-point lead at the intermission, and the defending tourney champion Lady Cavaliers held off their hosts down the stretch for a 45-40 win at The Trojan Trench.
Culver advances to play LaVille in the late semifinal at LaVille Thursday night at 8 p.m.
LAKEVILLE — John Glenn freshman Jake Strong lived up to his last name Tuesday, and the rest of the Falcons followed his lead.
The 6-foot-2 forward posted 21 points and eight caroms — both game-highs — and the Falcons’ defense left LaVille little room to breathe in a 57-47 first-round Bi-County Boys Basketball Tournament win at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium.
The Falcons return to LaVille Friday to take on two-time defending tourney champion Triton at 8 p.m.
LAKEVILLE — LaVille girls basketball head coach Kevin McCullough told a student Tuesday that he’d be satisfied with a one-point win over John Glenn.
In a stunningly unconventional way, his team delivered that single-tally margin.
LaVille, which committed 14 turnovers in the final frame and allowed a string of 22 second-half unanswered points, coughed up a 19-point second-half cushion but recovered just enough to eke out a 42-41 first-round Bi-County Tournament win over the Falcons at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium.
ARGOS — Argos and Bremen’s boys last met on Dec. 13, with the Lions taking a double-overtime win.
When the two teams met the second time at their Bi-County opener Tuesday, however, Ethan Pike took the suspense out early in a 60-37 Bremen win at at Phil Weybright Gymnasium.
Bremen will play the winner of a weather-postponed game between New Prairie and Oregon-Davis tonight in the early tournament semifinal Friday at LaVille at 6:30 p.m.

The Lady Dragons had snapped a 10-game drought to Oregon-Davis and moved into the class A rankings at No. 10 this week. Bremen had overcome an 0-4 start with six wins in its last seven outings.
In the end, it was the Lady Lions’ momentum that won out as they handed the host Dragons a 54-38 defeat at Phil Weybright Gymnasium.
