ELKHART — Culver Community earned its first sectional title in 26 years by battling from behind. On Saturday, the Cavaliers simply dug themselves too big a hole to climb out of.
Eastside plated six runs batting through the order during a big third inning, and although Culver scored three runs in the fifth and sixth, it was too little, too late as the Cavs suffered a season-ending 7-3 loss at the Class 2A Jimtown Baseball Regional in Elkhart.
Eastside went on to fall in 10-2 in the championship to Hanover Central at the tourney, while Culver closed out a banner year at 13-14.

PLYMOUTH — They say hitting is contagious, but once the Rochester bats caught fire Monday, it was downright virulent.
Rochester cranked out nine hits for eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings, tying up the Pilgrims at 6-all on a Chad Miller grand slam during a five-run fifth, then taking the lead for the first and last time with a three-run sixth as they ousted host Plymouth 9-8 in a Class 3A Sectional 19 semifinal at Bill Nixon Field.
The Zebras ultimately dropped the final 8-0 against Marian, which advanced through John Glenn in the other semifinal Monday morning.
PLYMOUTH — Mishawaka Marian opened and closed the door on John Glenn all in one inning.
The Knights got off to a bumpy start as two errors and a base hit loaded the bags with no outs in the top of the first, but Marian ace Taylor Krugh came right back at Glenn batters for three straight strikeouts to wiggle off the hook, and the Falcons barely threatened again in a 4-0 Marian win at the Class 3A Plymouth Baseball Sectional at Bill Nixon Field Monday.

BOURBON — There’s a saying in baseball and softball that the third out is often the hardest to get.
Three nights after battling with nine two-out runs to upset No. 5 Westville in their Class A Softball Sectional 51 opener Tuesday, the Lady Trojans experienced the flip side of that fact.
PLYMOUTH — Just when things seemed their darkest, Plymouth found a way to pull out the win.
PLYMOUTH — The hits have been coming for Culver Military all season.
But the Eagles struggled at the plate when it mattered most Thursday, recording just five hits for one run as they fell to Rochester ace Aaron Stuart 4-1 in Class 3A Plymouth Baseball Sectional action at Bill Nixon Field.
The Zebras move on to play Plymouth in a sectional semifinal Monday following another semi between John Glenn and Mishawaka Marian, scheduled for 11 a.m. The championship is slated for 8 p.m. Monday night.

ARGOS — Latisha Shepherd, a 5-foot-4 guard from Argos High School, has committed to continue her basketball and academic careers for the 2011-2012 season at Bethel College in Mishawaka.
“I chose Bethel because it is where I felt the most at home,” said Shepherd. “It allows me to enjoy the two things I love: playing basketball and being in a Christian atmosphere.”

BOURBON — After Westville ace Ashley Henrich shut out Triton in last year’s sectional championship game, the Trojans knew what they were up against.
On Tuesday, they were ready.
Triton batters took an aggressive approach at the plate and on the bags, and the Trojans surprised Henrich and the Blackhawks with 15 hits, earning a 9-6 upset of No. 5 Westville in a Sectional 51 semifinal at home. The win was a reprisal for last year’s final, when the Blackhawks handed their hosts a 7-0 win for the school’s first-ever championship.
BOURBON — Argos fell behind early and never recovered in a 12-2 Triton Sectional loss to South Central Tuesday.
