PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Speedway has announced that motocross driver and superstar stuntman Travis Pastrana will not attend the races on Friday as originally planned.

PLYMOUTH — A win is a win as they say, but Plymouth has its sights set on loftier goals as the 2011 girls golf season gets into full swing.
Led by returning junior Emily Berger’s 49, Plymouth carded a team score of 210 to trump Peru’s 222, while Caston was unable to record a team score as players forfeited with temperatures reaching into the 90s, and the Lady Pilgrims topped the field in their dual-meet season opener at a triangular match at Swan Lake Friday.

Ancilla student-athletes receive host of honors

DONALDSON — Ancilla College student-athletes Tyler Jackson, Demi Schrader, and Mark Reel highlighted a list of athletes who were recently honored for their achievements in the classroom, the college announced Friday.
Jackson and Schrader were named recipients of the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Excellence, while Reel was a recipient of the NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement.

Mystic Hills chosen for Pete Dye Golf Trail

CULVER — Mystic Hills Golf Course finds itself in the spotlight as the first stop on the Pete Dye Golf Trail.
The collection of seven unique courses personally selected by famed golf course architect and Indiana resident Dye — who boasts more than 20 courses within the state — officially launched July 28 and represent a varied array of design elements, topography and difficulty.

Culver Military product Suter to enter Hockey Hall of Fame

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Gary Suter, a 1982 graduate of Culver Military Academy, will be enshrined as a member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2011.
He will be joined by Chicago Blackhawks teammate Chris Chelios, Mike Emrick, Ed Snider, and Keith Tkachuk, it was announced Monday by USA Hockey. The five-member class will be formally installed into the Hall in Chicago this fall, with a date to be announced in the near future.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation celebrated 10 years of support for Riley Hospital for Children during a news conference in the hospital’s atrium Thursday.

Pastrana will host meet & greet Aug. 12 at Plymouth Speedway

PLYMOUTH — When Travis Pastrana took a spill at the X Games Thursday night, it wasn’t just the motocross champion’s foot that took a hit.
Pastrana’s fall at the X games broke two bones in his right foot and ankle, and he was scheduled for surgery on Friday. He’ll still attend TCU Night at the Plymouth Speedway to sign autographs and meet with fans, but the injured daredevil will be forced to sit out the Freestyle Motocross Show following the race.

Academies name Thompson new AD

CULVER — Matt Thompson has joined Culver Academies as the new Director of Athletics. Thompson comes to Culver from Beaver Country Day School in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, where he spent four years as the associate athletic director, physical education teacher and coach.
Prior to his time at BCDS, he served as the athletic director, Spanish teacher, and coach at the Knox School in St. James, New York. Over the course of his career, Thompson spent time as an athletic administrator and women’s soccer coach at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Centenary College in New Jersey.

Carpenter falls in match play at State Jr. Championships

LAFAYETTE — Triton High School’s Quentyn Carpenter won his first match play round but lost his second at the Indiana Golf Foundation Boys State Junior Championships at Kampen Golf Course at Purdue University in Lafayette Wednesday.
Carpenter beat Oliver Gibson of Fort Wayne before falling by a hole to Logan Barker in the second round of match play.
Carpenter qualified for the match play round of the State Junior Championships with a 76 Monday and 77 Tuesday in the stroke play qualifying portion of the tourney.

Auction to help Rockies football

PLYMOUTH — Rockies fans are ready for some football, and just in time, WTCA-AM 1050 will be holding an auction to raise money for the program.
Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. the station will host a live auction to raise money for Rockies football. Last year the auction raised $6000 for football at Plymouth High School, and this year’s items will try to top that.
“We don’t really have a goal amount for this year,” said Tonda Ellis, one of the organizers of the event. “Obviously we hope we can exceed last year’s total.”
