Lady Pilgrims open NLC at 3-2
Plymouth's girls tennis team opened the Northern Lakes Conference Tournament at home with a 3-2 start in the opening round in Centennial Park Wednesday.
Allie Berger beat Wawasee's Esther Hermann 6-3, 6-0 to advance to play Goshen's Miranda Kay — who beat Elkhart Memorial's Bailey Denton 6-1, 6-4 Wednesday — in the semifinals today.
WARSAW — If ever anyone had an excuse to just sort of coast through their senior track season, it would be Plymouth’s Dan Samuelson.
As a DI University of Michigan recruit in his primary sport of football, Samuelson is already one of the Rockies’ most accomplished athletes. And the Wolverines’ workouts give him plenty to do besides.
PLYMOUTH — It was back in the win column for Plymouth’s Pilgrims in a five-inning, 10-0 win over Triton Tuesday.
The game was originally cancelled by weather in early April, but the sky fell on Triton in the game’s fourth inning as they suffered from the illness that’s been plaguing the Pilgrims of late — the big inning.
A tight, well-pitched contest turned into a nine-run Plymouth lead when the Pilgrims plated seven in the fourth inning thanks to four Trojan errors.
INDIANAPOLIS — Three area basketball players were selected for Marion Crawley Scholarships as the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association announced winners for the Crawley, Junior Mannies and Pat Aikman Awards Tuesday.
Bremen’s Megan Stouder was named as one of 16 girls and LaVille’s Nicholas Amor and Triton’s Trenton Cooper were chosen as two of 12 boys players awarded 2013 Crawley Scholarships. Additionally, three student managers and three cheerleaders were named recipients of the annual scholarship awards.
LaVille wins at Knox
LaVille's softball team plated nine runs over the first two frames en route to a 13-8 defeat of host Knox in a Northern Lakes Conference game Tuesday night.
Hannah Herbster got the pitching win and doubled twice for the Lady Lancers, while Autumn Slough and Kendra Borton also doubled for LaVille, which out-hit the Redskins 17-7 while moving to 4-5 in the NSC and 8-7 overall.
Lydia Krueger doubled and tripled for Knox in the loss.

PLYMOUTH — Two days after shaving 18 strokes off their front side score for a new nine hole season-low at Orchard Ridge, Plymouth’s boys golf team pared off another four strokes Monday.
But Mishawaka Marian’s Matt Rozyck’s posted a field-best even-par 36, and the Pilgrims’ season-best 157 fell a stroke short of the Knights as Plymouth split with Marian and John Glenn in a three-way meet at the Silver Course at Indiana National.
While Rozyck carded a 36 in the second flight for Marian, teammate Michael Makris came in just a stroke behind him at 37.
WARSAW — A good weekend turned into a blue Monday for Plymouth’s Pilgrims as they took the road to Warsaw to fall to the Tigers (9-7) by a 7-1 final in an NLC battle.
Splitting games in their annual weekend tourney with Ft. Wayne Wayne and Penn had Plymouth feeling good about heading into a long week of games, but Warsaw pitcher Jason Ferguson made that good feeling go away with a masterful performance on the mound for the Tigers.
Bremen outlasts Triton in 11
Sabrina Gilley drove in the game-winner in the bottom of the 11th, and Class 2A No. 6 Bremen survived Triton’s best in a 5-4 Northern State Conference marathon session in Bremen Monday night.
Gilley finished with two hits and three RBIs helping keep the Lady Lions unbeaten in conference play at 10-0.
