LAKEVILLE — Slow starts led to quick exits for Plymouth and Culver Girls Academy in first-round softball sectional play Tuesday.
The Pilgrims yielded eight runs in the opening frame en route to a 10-0 five-inning loss to host Saint Joseph in a Class 3A Sectional 19 first-round contest at Newton Park.
Meanwhile, the Eagles surrendered a nine spot in the first inning and lost in five to Jimtown in the nightcap, 13-0.

TOPEKA — Emily Molden seemed to figure something out at the plate Monday night.
The freshman third baseman doubled three different times in the seventh spot in the Bremen lineup to help power the Lady Lions to a sectional-opening win over Central Noble. She wasn’t quite as hot in Tuesday’s semifinal, but she delivered when it mattered most.
Plymouth, CGA advance
Plymouth and defending regional champion Culver Girls Academy were both victorious in the Culver Tennis Regional semifinal round at Culver Academies Tuesday. CGA beat back Peru 4-1, while No. 1 Singles Allie Berger won in three sets to secure the Pilgrims’ 3-2 victory over Warsaw.
Championship match is set for 5:30 p.m. today.
In the individual singles tournament, Bremen’s Morgan Smith advanced in straight sets, while North Judson’s Jordan Frasure bowed out.

TOPEKA — It’s the old cliche for Bremen softball at the Class 2A Westview Sectional — the Lady Lions are taking it one game at a time.
So far, so good.
PLYMOUTH — As a final tuneup for the sectional the pitching couldn’t be much better, but there are some questions remaining for Plymouth at the plate as the Pilgrims pulled out a pitchers duel with Knox at Bill Nixon Field Monday night, 1-0.
A battle between Knox’s Davey Johnston and Plymouth’s Joey Dragani ended with the Knox (6-17) defense flinching in the Plymouth sixth and Dragani dealing a one-hit shut out as his final tuneup headed for sectional time.
Argos bows out
The Argos softball team bowed out with a 13-2 loss to host South Central in the Sectional 51 opener Monday night in Union Mills.
South Central now advances to face the winner of Monday’s other quarterfinal between Westville and Marquette Catholic tonight with a game between Northern State Conference foes Culver Community and Triton scheduled to follow.
Missy Golden and Charlie Horn each finished with two hits for Argos. Horn tripled and Golden drove in a run. Allison Flower, Raelynn LaFrance and Cylie Hartman all scored runs in the season closer.
Plymouth's Michael Hartman recorded wins in all four of his events — the 100, 200, open 400 and 1600 relay — to help power Plymouth to its eighth straight sectional championship on the Pilgrims' home track last Thursday.
Culver Girls Academy's Leah Heckaman won her second straight shot put title with a school record throw of 42"2.5" as part of a dual-win performance following another championship in the discus at the Rochester Track Sectional last Tuesday.
CULVER — Ryan Rapp is on a roll.
A week after winning the Uebele Invitational at Beechwood, the Marian University recruit and Triton senior claimed top honors at the Northern State Conference meet, beating out teammate and Ball State signee Quentyn Carpenter by a stroke with an even par 71 at Mystic Hills in Culver Saturday.
NorthWood, Plymouth compete at NLC meet
Warsaw beat out NorthWood 308-310 to split top honors in the final Northern Lakes Conference standings, while Plymouth placed seventh with a team score of 335 at the NLC Meet at Maple Crest on Saturday.
