TCU Athlete of the Week Matt Hurford

February 18, 2013

Culver Community’s Matt Hurford wrapped up a perfect 48-0 senior season with the 182-pound state championship at the IHSAA State Wrestling Finals over the weekend. This is Hurford’s second Athlete of the Week distinction of the season after a nomination back on Dec. 26 for winning his fourth straight Rochester Invitational championship.

King's Jewelry Athlete of the Week Jessica Avarone

February 18, 2013

Oregon-Davis’ Jessica Avarone put up a combined 28 points in two games — including a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds versus Morgan Township — as the No. 2 Lady Bobcats bowed out of the state tournament with a loss to No. 1 Fort Wayne Canterbury in the Class A Caston Regional championship game Saturday.

Hurford wins state title

February 18, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS — After all the miles he ran in preparation for this moment, it only made sense that Matt Hurford would run a little more.
A big, wide circle around the center mat, knees high, fists pumping in celebration, a look of both joy and relief on his face.
A minute before, in front of 10,000 cheering spectators at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Hurford had taken down Perry Meridian’s Jake Masengale for the second time during their 182-pound championship match at the IHSAA state wrestling finals.
That did the trick, as the Culver Community senior held on for a 9-4 victory.

No. 10 Plymouth falls to No. 4 Bison

February 18, 2013

RENSSELAER — A week ago, Plymouth’s girls basketball team ended a three-year sectional championship drought at New Prairie.
The Lady Pilgrims advanced through Griffith 32-25 in the morning game at Rensselaer Central, but their run at the program’s first regional championship since 2008 fell short when the No. 10-ranked squad dropped a 44-28 decision to No. 4 Benton Central in the title game Saturday night.

A Canterbury tale: No. 2 OD bows out vs No. 1 Cavaliers

February 18, 2013

FULTON — Oregon-Davis’ latest Canterbury tale ended like each of the previous four: elimination at the Caston Girls Basketball Regional.
This time, Class A No. 1 Fort Wayne Canterbury hit 62 percent from the field over the final three quarters, placed five players in double figures, dominated the boards, and pulled away for a 79-54 win over the second-ranked Lady Cats in the Caston Regional final Saturday.
The defending state champions Cavaliers, who knocked off OD in the 2009, 2010, and 2012 regional finals and 2008 regional semifinal, ended the Cats’ sensational season at 22-4.

CMA takes 2nd, Pilgrims close at Warsaw

February 18, 2013

WARSAW — Host Warsaw and Culver Military Academy swept through Saturday’s boys swim sectional.
Warsaw just won a few more.
Winning eight of the 12 events, the Warsaw Tigers won their sixth-straight sectional crown with 498.5 points, followed by CMA’s 439.5.
“It wasn’t the way I wanted it, obviously, but it was the way I thought it would end,” CMA assistant coach Major Tom Duckett said.
When Warsaw wasn’t winning, CMA was, led by senior Bryan DeVries.

Hurford, McHugh advances in 1st round of state finals

February 16, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS — The object of wrestling is to pin your opponent.
But if taking the other guy down a bunch of times works, well, that’s fine, too.
It certainly worked Friday for Matt Hurford. The Culver Community senior collected seven takedowns in a 15-7 victory over Avon’s Jonah Zorniger on the opening night of the IHSAA state wrestling finals.

Panthers trump Lions, 82-66

February 16, 2013

BREMEN — Playing behind in the post defensively left Bremen’s boys basketball team playing from behind on the scoreboard Friday.
Visiting NorthWood’s trio of 6-foot-5 juniors — Jonathan Wilkinson, Zach Zurcher, and Will Stueve — all easily reached double figures and the Panthers nailed a sizzling 63 percent from the field in an 82-66 victory over the Lions.

Trojans play complete game in Senior Night win over Tippy Valley

February 16, 2013

BOURBON — That atmosphere was electric at the Trojan Trench Friday night as the Triton Trojans welcomed the two-loss Tippecanoe Valley Vikings to a big showdown on Senior Night.
The Trench was packed and both teams put on a show that will not be easily forgotten in this rivalry. The Trojans played a near perfect complete game, shooting a blistering 56 percent from the field, and they would need every shot they got as they edged out the Vikings, 65-59.
