Plymouth falls at the end to St. Joe

April 4, 2013

PLYMOUTH — In baseball, it often comes down to who will flinch at the final challenge, and on Wednesday at least it was Plymouth’s Pilgrims (0-1) who flinched at the end, falling to South Bend St. Joe by an 8-3 final.
Only those in attendance would know it was tied at three headed to the final six outs.

Lady Dragons earn 1st win on the road in Culver

April 4, 2013

CULVER — It wasn’t always pretty, but the Lady Dragons got their first win Wednesday.
Argos jumped out to an 11-0 lead over the first four innings and held off a tenacious Culver Community squad to break into the win column, 20-6, on the road in Culver.
“This is the first game that I’ve had all of my players available to play. The first game I didn’t have four of my players, so this was more of a team effort,” said Argos softball coach Alyssa Thayer.

Judson nips Culver
North Judson plated a run in the top of the seventh, and the Bluejays hung on for a narrow 2-1 victory in their season-opener at Culver Community Wednesday night.
The game was a pitchers’ duel between Judson’s staff of Tyler Tunis and David Jacim and Culver’s Kyle Vlach as the trio combined to give up only four total hits in the opener.
The Cavs finished with just one hit at the game, a double from Nick Pritz, and the home team recorded three errors as they slipped to an 0-1 start.
Culver travels to Caston tonight with a 5:30 p.m. EST start time.

In his second season at the helm of Plymouth, Bales guided the Pilgrims to a 21-4 record and the team’s first sectional championship since 2010. He is 37-10 in two seasons with the Pilgrims since taking over for Kevin Stuckmeyer in 2011.

Glenn rallies for 4-1 win in home opener

April 3, 2013

WALKERTON — One night after scoring 25 runs at Oregon-Davis, the John Glenn Falcons found themselves in a dogfight with one of South Bend’s premier programs in Washington at home Tuesday night.
Fortunately for the Falcons, they got a stellar performance from pitcher Mark Einhorn and rallied with more than enough offense during a fourth-inning outburst to pull out the win.

Weather forces more postponements

April 3, 2013

The unseasonably cold early spring weather led to more postponements Tuesday night.
Plymouth’s baseball game with South Central was rescheduled for Thursday at 4:30 p.m. EST, and the Lady Pilgrims’ softball game at Mishawaka was also pushed back to Thursday at 5 p.m. Plymouth’s JV baseball game at Rochester was postponed with no rescheduled date as of press deadline.
Down the road in Culver, meanwhile, the Lady Cavaliers-Argos softball game was moved back a day to tonight with the same start time of 4:30 p.m.
LaVille’s baseball and softball games were also called Tuesday.

April 2, 2013

HAMLET — John Glenn put up some serious numbers on April Fool’s Day.
The Falcons racked up 11 hits while capitalizing on 11 errors and some shaky pitching by Oregon-Davis, and Glenn’s pitching staff combined for a no-hitter backed up by near-errorless defense.
The result was a 25-0 rout of the host Bobcats in five innings in the two teams’ season-opener in Hamlet Monday.
