LAKEVILLE — It hadn’t even been a week since the Oregon-Davis got star player Jesse Avarone back.
When the sophomore combo player went down again with an ankle injury early in the third quarter Monday, the Class A No. 6 Lady Cats rallied around her, unseating defending champion Culver 49-36 to retake the Bi-County title Monday at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium at LaVille.
BREMEN — It was a back to work Monday for everybody it seems, including Plymouth’s Pilgrims and Bremen’s Lions meeting in a rare Monday boys varsity basketball game, and it was the Pilgrims who rolled up their sleeves and came away with a win on the road by a final of 66-38.
MUNCIE — Plymouth High School alum and Ball State senior guard Randy Davis has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
This is the third time in his career that Davis has been honored by the MAC and the first this season.
Davis led the Cardinals to back-to-back road wins last week with victories at Central Michigan and Northern Illinois. His all-around play was a catalyst for the Cardinals as he averaged 9.0 points, 8.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game as Ball State improved to 4-1 in MAC play.
Culver’s Matt Hurford won the 182-pound championship at the Northern State Conference wrestling meet at Jimtown Saturday with a third-period tech fall.
Plymouth senior Alayna Holmquest set a school dive record with a 227.65 score in the last meet at the PHS pool Thursday at Plymouth.
LAKEVILLE — Triton earned a chance to play for its third straight Bi-County Championship with a victory over John Glenn, while New Prairie earned a berth opposite the Trojans for a bid at its first championship in 39 years with a win over Bremen in the semifinals at the 47th annual tourney at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium Saturday.

LAKEVILLE — Here comes Bi-County Girls Basketball Tournament rematch time for Oregon-Davis and Culver Community.
Class A No. 4 Oregon-Davis rode an outstanding defensive effort to a 54-35 semifinal-round victory Saturday morning at LaVille’s Dale E. Cox Gymnasium, while defending tourney champion Culver made a quick start stand up in a 55-43 win over the host Lancers in the second semifinal.
LaVille fans clap for their team during a Northern State Conference home game in December.
PLYMOUTH — Long after the last event had ended, Plymouth’s swimmers were still splashing around in the pool.
They might have been reluctant to leave the water in the last meet at the site, scheduled to close at the end of March. Or they might only have been caught up in the Senior Night celebration.
HAMLET — Jesse Avarone returned to form for Oregon-Davis Wednesday, and the Lady Cats were glad to have her back.
The sophomore combo player put up a game-high 26 points with three steals and seven rebounds in her second game back with a jammed finger after seeing limited action in a game in Chicago Saturday, and her performance helped lift the Class A No. 4 Cats to a 69-56 victory over visiting New Prairie in a weather-postponed Bi-County opener at The Den.
OD advances to play Bremen tonight in the Bi-County semifinals at 6:30 p.m. EST at LaVille.
