INDIANAPOLIS â€”Â Triton senior football player D.J. Riffle was among 24 seniors named to the 2012 Indianapolis Colts Academic All-Star team Sunday. Riffle was honored with members of the team at Lucas Oil Stadium prior to the game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Tennessee Titans.
To be selected to the team, players must be ranked in the top 5 percent in their class academically and must start in at least 70 percent of their teamâ€™s games.
D.J. is the son of Daniel and Sonya Riffle.
WALKERTON â€” Some of the John Glenn teams of the past might have been rattled seeing Plymouth walk into their gym, but not this one.
Even when the Lady Pilgrims threatened down the stretch, Glennâ€™s girls kept their composure.
ARGOS â€” It was a hard-fought, neck-and-neck game for most of the night at Phil Weybright Gymnasium, but the Lady Dragons of Argos prevailed over the CGA Eagles 55-50.Â
The Eagles started the game off well, taking a 16-10 lead after the first quarter.Â But everything changed when, with about three minutes left in the first quarter, 6â€™2â€ť senior Andrijana Cvitkovic left the game with a possible concussion after hitting her head on the floor.Â
Elliott steps up for Cavs
Winamac held Culver junior Trent Elliott seven points under his average, but Collin Stevens stepped up big as the Cavaliers handed host Winamac a 58-41 defeat Tuesday night.
Stevens led the Cavs with 17 points while Elliott put up 13 for Culver. Micah Budzinski finished with eight points and nine rebounds, Tucker Schutlz scored six with nine rebounds, and Jordan Sanders finished with seven points, four assists and six steals. Everett Krueger scored seven for the Cavsâ€™ balanced offense.
Winamac was led by Parker Foxâ€™s 10 points in the loss.
CULVER â€” At the tail end of last season, the Culver Academies swim teams spoiled an undefeated New Prairie record. But more than avoiding any potential reprisals for that loss, Mondayâ€™s dual meet at the Academies was more about a gut check than anything else.
Approaching the winter break after a grueling front end of the season and with all the fatigue, anticipation of the holidays and illness entailed by this time of year, new Culver head swim coach Cali Girard simply wanted to see her swimmers compete.
PLYMOUTH â€” For a third straight year area baseball players will get a chance to sharpen their game over the winter months.
Post 27 and the Diamond Spyders have opened the â€śSluggers Bullpenâ€ť for use in Plymouth. The facility is located in the back of the Youngâ€™s TV and Appliance building on Jefferson Street.
This Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Sluggerâ€™s Bullpen invites the public in for a special open house. You can go and see first-hand the programs and facilities available to players of any skill level or age.
PLYMOUTH â€” Haley Church has been named as the new varsity softball coach at Plymouth High School.Â Church replaces Ed Kelso, who had been the head coach at Plymouth the previous seven seasons.
LaVille wins 3rd straight
LaVille outscored the Lady Bruins 17-8 in the fourth quarter to break a 30-30 tie, and the Lady Lancers won their third straight on the road at Bethany Christian Monday night.
Junior forward Kelsey Gurtner put up 20 points, her second straight outing with 20 or more after a 26-point outing against New Prairie last Friday.
Hannah Herbster finished with eight points, and five other Lancers scored as the team earned its fourth win in five games.

Plymouthâ€™s Mack Mercer put up a combined 39 points with 12 rebounds in two games â€” and swatted out six blocked shots in a win over the Indians â€” as the Pilgrims remained undefeated with road wins at South Bend St. Joseph and Peru last week.
