Plymouth’s DeAndre Pickford went 5-0 alternating between 220 and heavyweight at the Plymouth Classic Super Eight Wrestling Tournament Saturday, following a winning performance in the Rockies’ conference opener with Goshen Thursday.
Triton’s Taylor Hatfield finished with a game-high 24 points to lead the Lady Trojans to a Northern State Conference schedule-opening win over visiting Knox at The Trojan Trench Saturday.
PLYMOUTH — They’ve had decent turnouts before, Plymouth’s wrestling team has. But this season, there’s a new twist.
“Our young kids are really coming through for us,” says Plymouth coach Bob Read. “We had a real good incoming freshman class and we had some kids who committed to the off-season, so it has made a difference.”
More than just a difference. If early results are any indication — like a second-place finish at Saturday’s Plymouth Classic Super Dual — the Rockies could be one of the better teams in northern Indiana.
CULVER — Gina Hierlmeier’s 100th win provided a nice cherry on top, but that wasn’t what the first-year Culver Community coach was thinking about heading into Saturday’s game with Bremen.
Hierlmeier was more concerned that the Lady Cavs open up their Northern State Conference schedule on the right foot.
It wasn’t always pretty, but Culver got the W by a convincing 52-38 margin at home at John R. Nelson Gymnasium, and the West Central transfer earned her 100th win in the process.
BOURBON — Triton girls basketball head coach Adam Heckaman needed all of 30 seconds to set his team straight Saturday.
Class A No. 9 Triton fired off 12 unanswered points — seven off Knox turnovers — out of a 30-second timeout with 4:44 left in the first frame and ran away with a 69-38 Northern State Conference win at The Trojan Trench.
After trailing 7-6 at the stoppage, the Trojans’ 1-3-1 zone trap inflicted a turnover epidemic, forcing 17 for the first half, while the offense converted 16-of-24 chances from the field before halftime.

Morgan Township hands Culver 1st loss
Morgan Township knocked down 14 free throws on 19 second-half attempts, and the home team rallied back from a 23-19 halftime deficit to hand Culver Community its first loss of the season, 49-43 Saturday.
Trent Elliott was held to 12 points to lead Culver, while Jordan Sanders finished with nine before fouling out in the defeat, which drops the team to 3-1.
Morgan was paced by Chase Braden’s game-high 22 points as the Cherokees earned their first win under head coach Eric Braden.
