IHSAA announces 40th annual sectional football draws

INDIANAPOLIS — All but one area team will open sectional play on the road, the IHSAA announced Sunday as it released its draws for the 40th annual state football tournament.
In the opening round Oct. 19, John Glenn will host Culver Military Academy in a rematch of a Week 6 match-up in Class 3A Sectional 17 play, with the winner advancing to play the winner of Gary Wallace at Mishawaka Marian the following week. Also in the tourney, Knox will travel to South Bend St. Joseph’s, while Hammond Gavit plays at Calumet in the other semifinal bracket.

Argos repeats in thrilling rematch with Lions at Culver

CULVER — It was all too familiar for Bremen’s boys soccer team.
After falling 2-1 in a penalty kick shootout to Argos at last year’s Culver Boys Soccer Sectional championship, the Lions had been dreaming of a reprisal for a year.
With Saturday’s rematch knotted in a 0-0 stalemate headed into the final minute, it looked like this year’s sectional championship would go into extra time once more.

Patterson lifts Lady Dragons to repeat

DeMOTTE — With under a minute remaining, Argos senior Jami Patterson took a ball from Charlie Horn, cut past two defenders at the 18 and hit a shot to her left. The ball careened off the post and into the goal to lift Argos to 2-1 over Boone Grove and clinch the Lady Dragons a repeat sectional title.

Plymouth No. 1 Vervynckt advances, Eagles bow out at CMA Tennis Semistate

CULVER — Plymouth senior No. 1 Gabe Vervycnkt has found a little extra motivation in this year’s state singles tournament.
While host Culver Military bowed out of team state tournament play with a 4-1 loss to Valparaiso at the Eagles’ home semistate Saturday, Vervynckt handed North Judson exchange student Thomas Simon his only loss of the year 7-5, 7-5 to become the first regional qualifier for the Pilgrims in recent memory in the IHSAA’s 33rd annual singles tournament at the Gable Tennis Complex in Culver.

Lopez pushes Warsaw past CMA
Culver Military Academy played No. 2 Warsaw to a 1-1 tie in the first half, but the Eagles ultimately came up short against the defending regional champions, 3-1 in the Class 2A Plymouth Boys Soccer Sectional championship Saturday night at Kindt Field.
