Rockies lose close match at NorthWood
Plymouth lost a Northern Lakes Conference heartbreaker at NorthWood Thursday, 37-31.
The Rockies forfeited at 119 pounds, and NorthWood won at four straight weight classes from 135 to 152, including three by pinfall and one by major decision.
NorthWood’s A.J. Carter also eked out a narrow 3-2 decision at 189 pounds to preserve the Panthers team win.
Plymouth had pinfall victories from John Mills at 103, Solis Osman at 112, Steven Abair at 130 and Vicente Vasquez at 160, while Kam Markovich won a major decision at 125.
ROCHESTER — Triton has rallied back for some slow starts lately defending its unbeaten run. On Wednesday, the Lady Trojans dug themselves a hole they couldn’t crawl out of.
An ailing Rochester squad overcame illness to jump out to a fast start, running up a 10-2 lead in the game’s first five and a half minutes, then held off visiting Triton down the stretch for a 36-33 victory to hand the Trojans their first loss of the season on the road.
DONALDSON — Brandon Query of Greencastle High School has signed with the Ancilla College men’s soccer team for the 2012 season.
The midfielder is the first official signing of the year for Ancilla head coach James Drzewiecki.
“Brandon is a great player to start our class off with,” said Drzewiecki. “He’s floated under the radar a bit, but the kid can flat out play. We’ve really been taken with his work rate, vision and technical ability. He’s our kind of player, and he’s a great fit for our system.”
PLYMOUTH — In a game between two young teams struggling to find wins, it was the Lady Pilgrims who finally found one.
Plymouth outlasted John Glenn with a 10-5 fourth quarter at the tail end of a game that featured four lead changes and two ties to snap a six-game skid and earn a much-needed 36-32 victory over the visiting Falcons at The Rock Tuesday.
BREMEN — Bremen leading scorer Ethan Pike played four quarters and two overtime periods without a single field goal Tuesday against Argos.
His work at the free-throw line, though, made all the difference.
Pike snapped a 41-all deadlock with a pair of free throws with 1:10 left in the second extra set and the Lions’ boys basketball team held on for a 44-41 double-overtime win over the Dragons.
CULVER — The Culver Cavaliers lost a heartbreaking match up against Winamac Tuesday night, taking their first loss of the season 47-40.
The Cavs (5-1) won the tip-off but Zach Shidler of Winamac stole the ball right back on the first possession, leading to the Warriors (4-1) putting up the first two points of the game. The Warriors went on to score 16 points in the first quarter, highlighted by 3-point buckets from Bryan McKinney and Kyle Krohn, who co-led Winamac as two of three players with 13 points for the night, along with Shidler.
Triton players Bryson Mosier and Drew Mosson look on with Triton coaches Jason Groves and Gordon Mosson during a basketball game earlier this season at Triton.
LAKEVILLE — LaVille’s young team struggled with high turnover numbers against Bethany Christian, and 6-1 Bruins forward Natalie Thorne scored a game-high 17 as the Lady Lancers lost a 43-38 contest at home at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium.
The Lancers (2-6) surrendered 26 turnovers to Bethany’s 15, and the Bruins (4-7) capitalized with 15 points off those miscues — most of which were unforced — to suffer their second straight loss after a Northern State Conference setback at New Prairie Friday.
LAKEVILLE — Grace’s baseball program has signed LaVille High School’s Quentin Herbster for the 2012-13 season.
Grace recruited Herbster as a versatile player with the ability to contribute as an infielder and an outfielder. As a junior, he was named First Team All-Northern State Conference for an outstanding season.
“I felt like Grace was where I could grow as a baseball player and could further myself spiritually,” Herbster said. “I’m excited to make an impact right away and work towards possibly a master’s degree at Grace.”
