Fallen hero will be remembered at 5th Annual McLochlin Memorial Run

PLYMOUTH — A lifetime of giving to others will be celebrated for a fifth straight year on July 9 as participants run, walk and remember Jeff McLochlin in his Memorial 5K Run/Walk fundraiser.
The run starts at the Young Amphitheatre in Centennial Park in Plymouth at 8:30 a.m. and all proceeds go to several charities in McLochlin’s name — TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors), the Rochester Jr. Football League and veterans’ families.

Plothow named Indiana All-Star North head coach

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth High School Head Baseball Coach Tony Plothow has been selected to coach the 2011 North All Star team at this year’s 37th Annual Indiana North-South All Star Game by his fellow coaches and the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association’s Executive Council. 

Ancilla’s Reese re-elected as MCCAA Western Conference Director

PLYMOUTH — Ancilla College Athletic Director Gene Reese has been re-elected to a second two-year term as the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Western Conference Director, the college announced on Thursday.
The election took place at the MCCAA Athletic Director’s Summer Meeting at Shanty Creek Resort in Bellaire, Mich.
“Being from the only (MCCAA-affiliated) college in Indiana, it is a tremendous privilege being asked to serve on these most important conference committees,” said Reese, who has overseen the Ancilla College athletic department since its inception.

Triton grad Ben Montalbano signs with Ancilla basketball

DONALDSON — Ben Montalbano will don the blue and yellow on the court once more, but this time he’ll do so for the Chargers.
Montalbano, a 2010 Triton High School graduate, has signed with Ancilla College men’s basketball for the 2011-2012 season.
Montalbano, a 5’8” point guard, was an Honorable Mention All-State selection in 2010 for Triton and helped lead the team to a state title in 2008 and a state runner-up finish in 2009.

Plymouth golfers score big at Sprig

BREMEN — Plymouth golfers won three of five boys divisions, while a St. Michael’s player won a fourth during a Marshall County Junior Golf Tour event at Sprig O’Mint Golf Club in Bremen Tuesday.
Pat Felke shot a 79 to win the boys 16-17 division, while John Schenk won the boys 12-13 competition with a 25, and another John Schenk was listed as winning the boys 10-11 group with a 25. Ethan Oliver of St. Michael’s won the boys 8-9 division, meanwhile.
LaVille’s Lauren Read shot a 58 to win the girls 12-14 division, while Bremen’s Lexi Miller carded a 39 to top the girls 8-11 group.

16th Annual Ancilla Golf Tournament a success

DONALDSON — The 16th annual Ancilla College Golf Tournament teed off on June 13 at the Plymouth Country Club with 40 teams taking part in the festivities to help raise money for the school.
The tournament, which followed a four-person Florida scramble format, raised nearly $21,000 for the Annual Fund. Funds received are pledged to support student grants and scholarships.

CGA’s Waverly Neer wins national junior championship

EUGENE, Ore. — Waverly Neer was never known for a tremendous kick during her high school athletic career.
But she sure picked the right time to come up with one.
Neer, a recent Culver Girls Academy graduate, outsprinted Kayla Beattie of Woodstock, Ill., in a dramatic homestretch drive to win the women’s 3,000-meter run Saturday night at the U.S. Outdoor Junior Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Her winning time — 9 minutes, 16.23 seconds — is equivalent to running two miles in less than 10 minutes.
Beattie was just a step behind at 9:16.39.

Plymouth’s Neidlinger commits to Dominican

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth’s Trisha Neidlinger has chosen Dominican University to continue her soccer career next fall.
Neidlinger was a four-year varsity starter for the Lady Rockies while at Plymouth.  She helped her team to the Northern Lakes Conference championship as a freshman and a conference co-championship her sophomore year, and as a junior and senior helped lead the team to consecutive sectional runner-up finishes in 2009 and 2010.

Uceny on the move after winning national championship

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Morgan Uceny is a woman on the move.
Today, she’s in Lausanne, Switzerland, getting ready to run in a big track meet Thursday. It’s a Diamond League meet, where a professional runner — such as Uceny — could potentially earn a lot of money.

Post 27 sweeps Jay Randolph in doubleheader

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth Post 27 ran its win streak to three straight games with a doubleheader sweep of Jay Randolph Post 507 Sunday, beating the visitors 3-0 in the opener and 14-2 in a five-inning nightcap at Bill Nixon Field.
James Hackworth pitched a complete game shutout in game one, striking out 15 with just one walk while scattering three hits, while Post 27 broke through with a run in the third and added two more in the bottom of the fourth for the win.
