ROCHESTER — It was an outcome determined by inches, individual plays, by fractions of seconds.
One moment Meagan Barron’s go-ahead free throw with 1.7 seconds on the clock set the Plymouth crowd on its feet, and the next Brenna Newell’s buzzer-beating jumper off the elbow left the Lady Pilgrims stunned as the Culver Girls Academy crowd rushed the floor in a 49-48 Class 3A Rochester Sectional opener with a championship feel Tuesday.
The Eagles play New Prairie in a semifinal Friday at 6 p.m. EST.
HAMLET — Triton junior center Megan Howdeshell picked a perfect time for her biggest offensive output of the year.
The Trojans also selected a darn good time to put forward a sparkling defensive effort.
Fueled by Howdeshell’s season-high 21 points as well as 32 South Central turnovers, Triton pulled away from the Satellites, 47-34 in a Class A Girls Basketball Sectional 50 first-round tussle at Oregon-Davis Tuesday.
Triton takes on Argos in semifinal-round play Friday at 8 p.m. EST.
HAMLET — Oregon-Davis’ talented collection of freshmen made the most of its girls basketball sectional debut.
Powered by rookies Jesse Avarone, Alicia McIntosh and Ashley Campbell, the Class A No. 5 Lady Cats rattled off 28 unanswered points to tip off the game and ousted winless Michigan City Marquette 82-18 in the Class A Sectional 50 opener Tuesday at The Den.
Four-time defending sectional champion OD entertains Westville in the sectional semifinal Friday at 6:30 p.m. EST.
GOSHEN — With its season on the line in Tuesday’s Class 2A Sectional 35 opener, the Westview girls basketball team caught fire from an unlikely spot.
After going 1 of 12 from 3-point range through three quarters, Westview hit four straight during a surge that turned a five-point deficit into an eight-point lead over Bremen, then went 6 of 6 at the foul line the rest of the way to secure a 48-41 victory.

Argos closes regular season with OT win
Argos finished out its regular season on a positive note Monday, outlasting Bethany Christian 46-45 in overtime on the road.
Jami Patterson knocked down four triples on her way to 15 points for the Dragons in the win, while Marla ZumFelde led Bethany with 18 points.
Argos finished enters the state tournament with an even 10-10 record and will play Triton — which advanced through South Central Tuesday — in the Class A Oregon-Davis Sectional Friday at 8 p.m.

Class 2A No. 6 Culver opened North Newton Sectional play with a convincing 55-31 victory over Hebron Tuesday.
The Lady Cavaliers held Hebron to just 17 points through three quarters, and Gwen Zehner powered their offense with 23 points followed by Alison Zehner’s 10.
The Hawks were led by Rachelle Cook’s 11 points.
Culver moves to an impressive 21-1 on the season and advances to play Boone Grove Friday at 7 p.m. EST, while Hebron closes out the year at 3-17.
