Triton surges past Bethany Christian

November 30, 2010

GOSHEN — Locked in a 19-all tie at the half, Triton head coach Adam Heckaman decided to take a gamble in the second half.
Switch up to a man-to-man defense to deny easy buckets in the paint and take a chance against Bethany Christian senior small forward Marla ZumFelde.
The gamble worked as sophomore Shana Anderson held ZumFelde to just four of her game-high 14 points after the break, and the Lady Trojans surged past the host Bruins for a 50-39 win at Goshen Monday.

Stevens steps up in Cavs’ win over West Central

November 29, 2010

CULVER — Culver Community’s Collin Stevens selected a perfect time to unveil his offensive capabilities.
With Culver senior standout Zoe Bauer’s open glances at a minimum, Stevens connected for 12 of his 15 points during the second half to help the Cavs to a 52-46 boys basketball win over visiting West Central at John R. Nelson Gymnasium Saturday.
“Collin Stevens was the difference in the ball game in the second half,” Culver head coach Kyle Elliott said. “Collin Stevens stepped up his offensive play, and he played a great game defensively. He played a great floor game at both ends.”

Plymouth wins opener vs. Bremen

November 29, 2010

PLYMOUTH — With so many new faces, Plymouth showed its inexperience early.
Once the shots started falling for the Pilgrims, however, they didn’t stop.
Plymouth got off to a shaky start, falling behind 5-4 at the first quarter break, but its defense clamped down on Bremen in the second frame, and the home team started knocking down some shots from deep — including two by versatile big man Sean Smith and another pair from newcomer Ryan McNeil — for a 15-2 run and eventual 46-27 season-opening win over the Lions at The Rock Saturday.

Bremen defensive in win over Argos

November 26, 2010

ARGOS — Bremen boys basketball coach Kyle Hanyzewski was itching to see his new-look Lions play.
You could see why during Wednesday’s season opener.
With stifling defense, Bremen jumped out to an early 18-point lead and cruised to a 44-29 victory over Argos.
“I came here saying we wanted to be 1-0, and we are,” Hanyzewski said. “As a coach and perfectionist I’m going to critique some things I didn’t like, but the bottom line is 1-0.”
Bremen’s pressure on the ball forced 24 turnovers, eight during the first quarter, which set the tone for the entire game.

Glenn gets off to shaky start but survives at Clay

November 26, 2010

SOUTH BEND — John Glenn racked up 25 turnovers, missed 19 free throws, surrendered 16 unanswered points in the first frame — and still won.
Of course, South Bend Clay clanked 15 charity tries, struggled to a 36 percent mark from the field against Glenn’s 2-3 zone and man defenses, and suffered persistent foul trouble itself.
In the season debut for both teams that looked every bit of it, the Falcons nailed all seven of their third-quarter offerings from the field, including four from downtown, to escape with a 61-54 boys basketball victory over the host Colonials Wednesday.

WALKERTON — John Glenn head girls basketball coach Dan Hutton has been named the 2010 Falcon Award Winner.
He will receive the award Tuesday between Glenn’s junior varsity and varsity boys basketball game against South Bend Riley. He will also receive the Northern State Conference Service Award at the ceremony.
JV start time is slated for 6 p.m., and there will be a reception held in Hutton’s honor in the Glenn High School teachers’ lounge after the varsity contest.

Plymouth rallies past Triton

November 19, 2010

BOURBON — Close basketball games are often decided at the free throw line.
The Lady Trojans committed 17 second-half fouls to put Plymouth in the double bonus less than 2 minutes into the fourth quarter. Three Triton starters eventually fouled out, and the Pilgrims went on to capitalize at a 12-for-17 free throw rate in the final 6 minutes to rally past Triton for a 52-47 victory at The Trojan Trench Thursday.

NorthWood overcomes pesky Bremen

November 19, 2010

NAPPANEE — Early in the season and with an inexperienced roster, NorthWood girls basketball coach Steve Neff will take a win any way he can get it.
NorthWood shot just 38 percent from the field and dealt with senior Taylor Olson’s foul trouble, but overcame both for a 57-49 win over Bremen Thursday night.
“We’re going through some growing pains, and I’m happy because they kept their heads,” Neff said. “And (Bremen) has a nice, scrappy team and they’re going to win some games this year.”

Argos 'D' keys win over Triton

November 17, 2010

ARGOS — Argos' girls basketball team learned a valuable lesson about being in the right place at the right time Tuesday.
Boosted by a fleet-footed backcourt, the Dragons' help-and-recover man-to-man defense held visiting Triton to a miserable 17 percent clip from the field, and senior forward Latisha Shepherd knocked down a game-high 18 points as Argos earned a 43-29 win at Phil Weybright Gymnasium.
Argos' help-side defense, which consistently plugged up driving lanes, relegated the Trojans to the perimeter where they finished 3 of 18 from 3-point range.

Plymouth coasts past Rochester in season opener

November 17, 2010

ROCHESTER — A little of the old, a little of the new.
Plymouth's girls swim team brought the perfect combination of experience and new talent to their season opener Tuesday, coasting to an eventual 127-58 win at Rochester.
The Lady Pilgrims grabbed wins in all swim events and swept the top three spots in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle swims as well as the 100-yard breast stroke race.
