National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch which is in effect from Thursday afternoon through Friday evening.
Lake effect snow showers are expected to form late Thursday afternoon and persist through Friday evening. Portions of Northern Indiana, generally north of highway 6 could see between 8 to 12 in., while areas further south could see 4 to 8 in. In addition, strong, gusty west to northwest winds could cause limited visibility, and blowing and drifting of snow across roads may make driving hazardous.

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Park Department is partnering with resident Jane Blank to collect clothing and shoe donations until Jan. 23. Donations of gently used women's, men's and children's clothing and shoes can be dropped off at the park office until Jan. 23.
Blank decided to organize a community clothing drive around Thanksgiving.
"I just thought that there is so much waste (of used clothes)," said Blank, explaining that although clothes are often donated to Goodwill and other similar organizations, "some people can't afford the five dollars or whatever it is to buy from Goodwill."

Starke County is grieving the loss of one of their own. U.S. Army SPC Robert (Bobby) Tauteris Jr., 44, of Hamlet, died a hero’s death while defending his country in Afghanistan last Friday morning. Tauteris, along with three other soldiers, lost his life when their vehicle hit an IED (roadside bomb). A fourth soldier was injured.
SPC Brian Leonhardt, 21, of the Merrillville area, was one of the four soldiers lost. Leonhardt also has family and friends in Starke County who are heartbroken over the loss of this young hero.

PLYMOUTH — County maintenance director Rich Ulrich spoke to county council members Monday about the two county building elevators, which are again out of commission.
"This is our worst-case scenario," said Ulrich, calling the elevators "obsolete" and noting that the 30-year-old machines have never been updated with new technology.

BOURBON — Triton School Corporation superintendent Carl Hilling announced his resignation at a regularly scheduled school board meeting Monday evening. He will continue his duties as superintendent until the end of the 2011-12 school year.
"It's been a good four years," said Hilling, "but I have a wife who needs me in Michigan."

BOURBON — Zak Hoffer, of Bourbon, is a fairly average 21-year-old. A fan of classic rock music, he enjoys playing his guitar, spending time with his family, and bowling. But what's not so average is Zak's past. When Zak was 10 years old, he was hit by a car while out riding his bike, landing him in the hospital for three months and causing permanent brain injuries.
"We didn't think that he would have a future," said Zak's mother, Patty Hoffer-Steele. "When we left the hospital the psychologist told us he would never have a normal conversation again."

PLYMOUTH — The annual Bridal Fair sponsored by Treat’s Bridal Shoppe and Squire Shop is this Saturday at Christos’ Banquet Center in Plymouth.
“We have a lot of newness in our vendors (this year),” said Gary Treat, owner. “There are a lot of new (trends) in bridal styles, and we will show those, as well as some prom styles.”

PLYMOUTH — This winter, try your hand at whipping up some proscuitto-wrapped asparagus or roasted salmon in one of Fitness Forum’s new cooking classes at the LifePlex. Held once a month beginning in January, these classes focus on creating delicious food that is also healthy. Chef Brad Hindsley, of Spire Catering and Event Planning in LaPorte, will join forces with Phyllis Wille, owner of the New Kitchen Store in Walkerton, to demonstrate easy skills that will help class participants create their own gourmet masterpieces.
PLYMOUTH — The first baby to be born this year at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth was Peyton Burdick, who was born at 10:21 a.m. New Year’s Day.
She weighed 7 pounds and 6 ounces. Her parents, Christine and Jeff Burdick of Walkerton, said that Peyton was originally due on Christmas Eve.
At the time, they didn’t put much thought into Peyton being the first baby of the new year.
