PLYMOUTH — It didn’t take a fairy godmother to make area high school girls’ dreams of wearing the perfect gown to the prom this year a reality. It just took the idea of a Tri Kappa member and the hard work of many others.

Harper shares story of local African American community

As has been documented in recent years, Culver was once home to a thriving African American community which included members of the first integrated high school basketball team in Indiana (in 1922), an African Methodist Episcopal Church, and many more notable features. Of that community, Jim Harper remains to tell the story, which is what he did last week at two events at the Culver-Union Township Public Library -- one aimed at teens (last Thursday) and one at adults (on Saturday), in honor of Black History Month.

United Way continues celebration with Bierman

PLYMOUTH — The celebration of 50 years continues for the United Way of Marshall County.
A year of celebration of the historic landmark for the organization that has made a difference in the area will continue with the United Way annual meeting on Tuesday April 12. United Way will recognize all the past chairman of of the organization’s annual fund drive and conduct the regular yearly business such as nominating and electing officers. Then the party starts.

Culver Cub Scouts hold Pinewood Derby

Culver’s Cub Scout Pack 290 held its annual Pinewood Derby January 19, at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Culver.
Of the nearly 20 Cubs and visiting youngsters participating in the event, the following awards were given:
Open class: 1st place: Logan Coiner, 2nd: Chuck Robbins, 3rd: Mary Boland.
Tiger Den: 1st place Gavin Salyer, 2nd: Phoenix Dickson, 3rd: Cody Winkler.
Wolf Den: 1st place: Trayden Schrimsher, 2nd: Shane Stevens, 3rd: Morgan Keller
Bear Den: 1st place: Colton Wynn, 2nd: Noah Parsons, 3rd: Nolan Shaffer.

Konya’s time as trustee celebrated

LAPAZ — Surrounded by family, friends, and colleagues Saturday in the small community room of the LaPaz-North Township Volunteer Fire Department building Elma Konya received a hero’s applause when she rose to her feet and reflected on the guiding principle she has used to serve the North Township community over the last 40 years as trustee.
“I lived through the Depression. I knew what it was like to be hungry, to not have a roof over your head, to be without heat. You care for each other,” she said.

Driver complains of back, neck pain after crash

Wednesday, around 9:55 a.m., Ashley Zehner, 19, was traveling west on 9C Road near Tulip when she lost control on ice-covered road surface. Zehner spun off the road and traveled into the south embankment where she then struck a telephone junction box. Her vehicle came to rest facing east. Zehner said she was driving west when a mail delivery vehicle was on the side of road, and when she applied brakes to slow, her vehicle started to slide. Zehner was transported to St . Joseph Regional Medical Center for complaint of pain to the back and neck area.

Culver students learn to ‘pay it forward’ in their community

The term, “pay it forward” has been in vogue in recent years, especially following the release of the popular 2000 movie of the same name, though many may not realize that, like many films, “Pay it Forward” was based on a book (in this case by Catherine Ryan Hyde).

Benefit for Boys & Girls Club set for March 19

BREMEN — The Boys & Girls Club of Bremen is preparing to host its second annual Great Big Kid Club event March 19 at 5:30 p.m. at St. Isadore Hall, Bremen. The evening will feature dinner from Hoosier Catering and an art show featuring creations by the children of the Boys & Girls Club of Bremen.
