Bremen teachers' contract shelved for now

BREMEN — Teachers at the Bremen School Board meeting last Tuesday hoped to have approved a tentative contract they had reviewed with the school superintendent. What they found instead was a decision to table the agreement between the Bremen Educators Association (BEA) and the Bremen Public Schools for “further study” by the board.

Bill may require school to start after Labor Day

PLYMOUTH — Indiana public schools could be updating calendars for the 2013-14 school year if a bill introduced into the Indiana State Senate Jan. 5 continues to be met with approval.
Senate Bill 0171, concerning restricting start and end dates for school calendars, was introduced on first reading Jan. 5, 2011 and was then referred to the Committee on Education and Career Development.
Originally authoring the bill were Dennis Kruse, District 16; Mike Delph, District 29, and Scott Schneider, District 30.
On Jan. 13, Frank Mrvan, District 1, signed on as co-author.

Boys & Girls Club ‘jazzing it up’ for fundraiser

PLYMOUTH — The Boys & Girls Club of Marshall County will celebrate another successful year while raising money to continue their programs at this year’s February fundraising dinner with the theme “All That Jazz.”
“Last year the theme was ‘Fire and Ice’ and it was a theme I’d always wanted to do,” said the club’s director, Billie Treber. “This year Mary Beth Listenberger said we’d do ‘All That Jazz’ since it’s something that she’s always wanted to do.”

Culver pantry has banner season -- thanks to local kids, volunteers

If Culver area youth were to hold drives for the Culver Council of Churches food pantry year-round, says pantry Director Leroy Bean, the shelves would likely always be stocked and the coffers full of funds. Bean knows whereof he speaks: between November 15 and December 20, the pantry took in 4,258 pounds of donated items, and a good share of it came through the efforts of local young folks.

Trone, one architect of Culver planning, part of long legacy of Culver service

Culver's Pete Trone began his service on Culver's planning and zoning boards for which he was recognized by both the Culver Board of Zoning Appeals (in late November), and the Town Council (in December) 34 years ago.
Trone's father, Donaldson, arrived at Lake Maxinkuckee around 1904 when Donaldson's parents rented the old Norris farm on the east shore of the lake. That first summer, the family came by train and rented a horse and wagon, says Pete. Don Trone was 11 or 12.

Life Enrichment Center hosts 'Health Week' activities

PLYMOUTH —  The Marshall County Council in Aging will offer several activities to the public during "Health Week" at the Life Enrichment Center, 1305 W. Harrison St., Plymouth.
Tuesday, Feb. 8 Dr. Carrie Cadwell will be on hand from noon to 2 p.m. to speak on "Understanding Anxiety and Depression in Older Adulthood." 
Wednesday, Feb. 9 Dr. Randazzo will speak at 8:30 a.m., Angie Stopzcynski with the South Bend Medical Foundation will be on hand from 12:30 to 2 p.m. and Ancilla College will offer a blood pressure/glucose reading clinic from 1 to 2 p.m. 

National anthem and halftime singers, performers sought

The Ancilla College athletic department is looking for individuals or groups to sing the National Anthem at the beginning of the women’s basketball games.

Ancilla is also looking for individuals or groups to perform during half-time.

Book club meets Saturday

PLYMOUTH — The City Center News and Books is sponsoring an in-store book club. 
Its first meeting will be a “meet-and-greet” tomorrow, Jan. 22, at 10 a.m., at the bookstore. The first book choice, “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide,” by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn will be presented to participants.
All book lovers are invited to join this group.

Icy road to blame for accident
PLYMOUTH — Icy road conditions were blamed for an accident that happened Tuesday morning at 9B Road east of Fir Road in Plymouth. Crystal Overmyer, 18, Plymouth, had been driving a 2003 Chevy Cavalier east on 9B at 7:55 a.m. when it began to slide. She lost control of the vehicle, ran off the road and into a utility pole. Overmyer complained of pain from the accident but refused treatment at the scene.

Young Author's Conference is Feb. 24

PLYMOUTH — The Marshall County Reading Council is hosting its annual Young Author’s Conference Feb. 24 at Lincoln Jr. High at 6 p.m.
The guest author being featured this year is Helen Frost. Frost is the author of Monarch and Milkweed and six novels-in-poems for readers in elementary, middle school and high school.
