LAKEVILLE — The Union-North School Corporation made it official Wednesday night that Mitchell Mawhorter will begin his duties as the superintendent Jan. 2. Mawhorter comes from his current job as principal at Jimtown Junior High School.
Board President Mark Dickson had made the announcement Dec. 22 that Mawhorter had been chosen by the board to fill the top spot. The position has been filled by interim Julie Lauck since October of this year after being hired in September.

PLYMOUTH — Construction on the Community Resource Center in Plymouth is coming along nicely, according to board members’ reaction during a walk-through tour Tuesday.
“I’m just ecstatic, I couldn’t say anything negative at all,” said board of directors vice president Ralph Winters after the tour.

Plymouth Fire Chief Andy Metsker brings sheets of barn metal to a pile at a fire on 6th Road Thursday afternoon. More details will be available Friday.

ARGOS — Chaz Downey, 8, of Argos, loves sports. His favorite is basketball, and he can shoot hoops with amazing accuracy for his age, according to his mother Jackie Campbell. Chaz especially likes cheering on his older brother, Chandler, at his basketball and soccer games.
If it hadn’t been for quick action by his doctors two years ago, however, Chaz might not be able to do the things he loves today. During a routine checkup at the Down Syndrome clinic at Riley Hospital in Indianapolis in 2009, his pediatrician, Dr. Maria Stanley, discovered that Chaz’s spine was extremely loose.

PLYMOUTH — Wednesday was a day of “firsts” for Patt Houghton. Unbeknownst to her, Houghton’s sister-in-law Donna Kelly had nominated her for a Hello Gorgeous makeover at C.C. Hair Co. in Plymouth. Houghton was treated to her first pedicure, first facial and first hair coloring treatment as part of the makeover — all of which was a complete surprise to her.
“(Houghton) has always given of herself, and I thought it was her turn to be pampered,” said Kelly, watching with misty eyes as Houghton picked out a sparkly pink nail polish for her toes.

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Community School Corporation was one of nine Indiana schools recently awarded up to $3,000 each in grants from the Indiana Arts Commission. The money will be used to fund a “virtual book club” at Lincoln Jr. High School and Plymouth High School — an extension of the “One Book, One Town” community-wide literacy event. This year, the theme is the Civil War — specifically, the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Shiloh.
