October 13th
A Dulcimer Decade
On a bright crisp fall day in 2000, Marcy Prochaska was driving across Virginia to pick up a bright and lovely new thing: a hammered dulcimer of her own. In celebration of that anniversary, she will present a concert at 4 p.m., Sunday October 16, in the Legion Memorial Building on the campus of Culver Academies.

KNOX — A community is in mourning following the tragic loss of a Knox High School student. Andrew “Drew” Shearin was a 17-year-old junior whose life touched an unbelievable number of hearts before he was prematurely torn away from his family and friends, spurring an astounding amount of sorrow in the community.
Shearin's death is the result of a single-car accident which occurred on S.R. 8 in Starke County Monday night. While the accident is still under investigation, police said alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor.

PLYMOUTH — It’s highly unlikely that Chad Van Herk has ever suffered from boredom.
The PHS grad and Marshall County native and singer/songwriter has just released his second album of songs “Daydreaming Days Away” but his musical pursuits are just part of an amazingly eventful young life. Born in the British Virgin Islands, Van Herk has probably spent more of his life on the sea than dry land.

PLYMOUTH — Most kids can’t wait to get out of school when the final bell rings. Not so for 60 Lincoln Junior High students — at least not on Tuesdays.
Tuesday afternoons between 3 and 5 p.m. are devoted to Five Star, an after-school program that uses volunteer “coaches,” games and discussion times to encourage students to live a “Five Star life.”
“So many kids feel like they are losing, and we want them to win,” said LJH head coach Casey Martin.

PLYMOUTH —Quick response from local law enforcement after receiving a 911 call on Monday led to the arrest of two only minutes after one of the two allegedly robbed the Subway restaurant at the corner of Michigan and Jefferson Streets in Plymouth. The call came from the Subway at approximately 1:43 p.m.
According to the caller, the suspect had left the restaurant and was heading north on Michigan Street in a red Ranger vehicle.
October 10th
PLYMOUTH — Two individuals robbed the Subway restaurant on the corner of Michigan and Jefferson Streets in Plymouth shortly before 2 p.m. this afternoon.
Plymouth police responded to a 911 call from Subway at approximately 1:43 p.m. The suspect had left already and was heading north on Michigan Street in a red Ranger.
Cpl. Ray West and Ptl. Nick Young located the vehicle at approximately 1635 N. Michigan St. Ptl. Young attempted to stop the vehicle for questioning, and the suspect fled.

PLYMOUTH — The debate on whether holding a student back a grade in school is more detrimental or beneficial has been going on for as long there have been schools, parents and students. But now, the decision to retain students in third grade who have not achieved a third grade reading level is being taken out of the hands of both local schools and parents.
The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) is launching the I-READ 3 (Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination) assessment during the spring 2012 test window, which is March 19-21, 2012.

It's been several years of waiting, but a Culver Community High School graduate (and familiar face at the school today) seems poised to see a business dream come to fruition.
October 6th
Culver's town council last Tuesday was urged by several in the audience to push harder to fill its vacant town manager position, even as council members explained some of the frustrations and intricacies of their search up to now.
October 5th
If there’s a real lesson in the confusion following an incident a week ago Monday at the Culver Community Middle School, it’s not so much in how to deal with students bringing a gun to school -- which didn’t, in fact, happen -- as it is an opportunity for parents and students alike to become better and more informed “digital citizens.”
