PLYMOUTH — Henry F. “Hank” Hartwell, 89, a Plymouth resident most of his life, passed away at 4:46 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2012 in Florida Heartland Hospital, Sebring, Fla.
Hank was born Jan. 27, 1922 in North Vernon. He was raised in the Bright-Side Orphanage in Plymouth, and considered Leo and Stella Manuwal his mom and dad. He was a graduate of Plymouth High School.
He was a veteran of WWII, enlisting in the U.S. Navy Sept. 12, 1942 and was discharged Dec. 11, 1945.

Cavs hand Trojans NSC loss, 48-24

CULVER — With under a week and a half remaining until the Northern State Conference Meet, every NSC win is a big one.
The Culver Cavaliers won 10 of their 14 matches against conference foe Triton to take a dominant 48-24 victory over the visiting Trojans at home Wednesday and improve their seedings in the NSC.
“I’m pleased with our performance tonight. Our guys wrestled very hard. They’ve been working hard in the room,” said Culver head coach Louis Posa.

Culver shoots through Westville
Culver shot 64 percent from the field while holding Westville to a 34 percent clip, and the Cavaliers claimed a 70-53 win on the road against their sectional 51 foes Wednesday.
Trent Elliott led all scorers with four 3s en route to 21 points at the contest, while Allen Biggers finished with 16, and Jacoda Anderson and Micah Budzinski each finished with 10 as Culver recorded 19 total assists in the win.
Westville was led by Dan Warnke and Kevin Stone-Tharp with 14 apiece, while Glen Cole had 13 for the Blackhawks.

WEATHER UPDATE: Lake effect snow expected Thursday

National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch which is in effect from Thursday afternoon through Friday evening.

Lake effect snow showers are expected to form late Thursday afternoon and persist through Friday evening. Portions of Northern Indiana, generally north of highway 6 could see between 8 to 12 in., while areas further south could see 4 to 8 in. In addition, strong, gusty west to northwest winds could cause limited visibility, and blowing and drifting of snow across roads may make driving hazardous.

Park Dept. seeks clothing, shoe donations

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Park Department is partnering with resident Jane Blank to collect clothing and shoe donations until Jan. 23. Donations of gently used women's, men's and children's clothing and shoes can be dropped off at the park office until Jan. 23.
Blank decided to organize a community clothing drive around Thanksgiving.
"I just thought that there is so much waste (of used clothes)," said Blank, explaining that although clothes are often donated to Goodwill and other similar organizations, "some people can't afford the five dollars or whatever it is to buy from Goodwill."

4 soldiers killed: 2 with Starke County ties

Starke County is grieving the loss of one of their own. U.S. Army SPC Robert (Bobby) Tauteris Jr., 44, of Hamlet, died a hero’s death while defending his country in Afghanistan last Friday morning. Tauteris, along with three other soldiers, lost his life when their vehicle hit an IED (roadside bomb). A fourth soldier was injured.
SPC Brian Leonhardt, 21, of the Merrillville area, was one of the four soldiers lost. Leonhardt also has family and friends in Starke County who are heartbroken over the loss of this young hero.

OSCEOLA — Loneda M. “Granny” Robinson, 92, of Osceola, passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka. Loneda was born Feb. 14, 1919 in Marshall County to the late Henry and Amelia (Birk) Hummel. In September of 1937, she married Marion C. Robinson. He preceded her in death, passing away June 16, 1956.

Big ‘D’ not enough for Big Red in LaPorte loss

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth’s defense held LaPorte to its second-lowest production of the season, but the Lady Pilgrims’ offensive woes proved insurmountable Tuesday.
The Pilgrims finished just 8 of 36 (22 percent) from the field — including a 1-of-8 mark in the second quarter — and converted on only 8 of 17 (47 percent) from the line in their second straight loss, a 31-25 defeat at the hands of the visiting Slicers at The Rock.
