Humane Society celebrates updated room

PLYMOUTH — It’s a whole new world for the five adult cats currently calling the Marshall County Humane Society their home. The organization was recently able to add on to their building, creating a spacious, cheery new space for their feline population. A far cry from the smaller, darker room that used to house the cats, the new area features eight cat “condos” and beautiful skylights to let in the sun’s rays.
“We wanted to improve the quality of life for these cats,” said Humane Society director Nancy Cox. “Now, they have everything they need right here.”

Changes coming for fees

PLYMOUTH — Beginning July 1, each person who pays a phone bill in the state of Indiana — whether it’s a landline or a cell phone — will pay 90 cents a month toward 911 dispatch services. The money will be collected by the state, then distributed to individual counties.
“We are guaranteed to receive no less than the average of our last three years’ fees,” said Marshall County auditor Penny Lukenbill in the county commissioners meeting Monday.

MCCF announces Lilly Scholarship recipient is Jordan

BREMEN — One Marshall County student has been named recipient of a four-year, full tuition scholarship as the Marshall County Community Foundation 2012 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.
Jack Jordan will receive full tuition to the Indiana college of his choice and a $900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment.
Jack is the son of Jack and Hope Jordan of Bremen. He attends Bremen High School. Jack is planning to attend Purdue University and will major in Engineering and minor in Business.

OGDEN, Utah — Gerry Gawain Funk, 64, passed away peacefully, Wednesday March 28, 2012, from cancer. Gerry was born Jan. 2, 1948 to Gawain Marion Funk and Evelyn Pearl Miller Funk in Plymouth. Gerry married Dixie Gray June 29, 1968 in Washington D.C. Gerry served in the United States Navy. 
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Bremen senior Jack Jordan was chosen as one of 12 student-athletes in the state to receive the IHSAA’s Eugene Cato Memorial Scholarship Award last week.

LaVille graduate Elaine Schmeltz won two events under windy conditions Friday at the Defiance College Yellow Jacket Open, and the Taylor freshman set a new school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to lead the Trojans to a second place finish in the seven-team field.

Knox teacher arrested for child seduction

Robert "Ryan" Corbin was arrested Sunday, April 1 and is being held at the Starke County Jail on preliminary charges of child seduction.
Corbin, 27, was arrested following an investigation that began last Wednesday, when the parent of a Knox High School student lodged a complaint regarding improper Internet contact between a student and teacher.
Corbin teaches physical education at Knox High School.
He is also the varsity girls and boys swim coach.
Knox City Police are still investigating the matter and no more information will be released until the investigation is completed.

Bremen’s Jordan receives IHSAA’s Cato Scholarship

BREMEN — Bremen’s Jack Jordan has been selected as one of 12 senior student-athletes to receive the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s 2012 C. Eugene Cato Memorial Scholarship Award.
Each individual will receive a $2,500 scholarship for their prep accomplishments and will be recognized on Thursday, April 12 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in downtown Indianapolis as part of the Brady Sports Achievement Awards established by Methodist Sports Medicine.
