December 13, 2010

CULVER — Clinging to a tenuous 47-43 lead late, Culver Community girls basketball head coach Tony Scheub heard the magic words “man-to-man.”
The Cavs adjusted — and executed — accordingly.
Culver senior Whitney Sanders fed 6-foot-1 senior Gwen Zehner from the right wing to the right block for three buckets in a 51-second span to open a 10-point spread with 3:46 left in the final frame, and the Cavs hung on for a 61-53 Northern State Conference win over Knox at John R. Nelson Gymnasium Saturday.

Bremen falls short despite strong defensive effort

December 13, 2010

BREMEN — The wins might not be there yet for the Bremen boys basketball team, but improvement is.
A year ago, South Central beat Bremen by 29 points. It was a different game Saturday night, as Bremen had its chances in a 47-40 loss to the Satellites.
“The effort is always going to be there, and we executed the defensive game plan to perfection,” Bremen coach Kyle Hanyzewski said. “The only problem was our offense didn’t show up tonight. We just have to get those two going together, and when we do on the same night, we can beat some teams.”

No injuries as truck sinks

December 12, 2010

Joshua Markin, 25, of South Bend's black Durango became submerged at the Lawrence Lake access site on Olive Trail Friday morning. Markin said he was planning on fowl hunting at the lake and was parked on the ramp access. He said he returned to the truck and it began to move forward. He told officers he couldn’t remember if the truck was in reverse, drive, neutral or park. As the truck neared the water, Markin escaped through the sunroof. When the vehicle was pulled from the lake, it was in park.

Hensler’s cuts annual Statehouse tree

December 12, 2010

HAMLET — A Christmastime atmosphere will fill the air at the Statehouse Rotunda as a magnificent Concolor Fir is moved into the building, bringing with it the citrusy aroma of the holidays.
This glorious tree, which stands roughly 25 feet tall, is a testament to the skill and care of the growers at Hensler Nursery, Inc. in Hamlet.
In addition to providing the tree for the Statehouse, they will also be presenting Lt. Governor Becky Skill-man with an 8-foot Fraser Fir.
