McBee is all grown up for Culver

January 25, 2011

CULVER — Patrice McBee is all grown up.
Not just in a physical sense — although at 6-foot-3, the Culver senior is certainly that, too — but spectators of Lady Cavaliers basketball have seen McBee’s game reach new heights recently.
At last week’s Bi-County Tournament, McBee scored a combined 49 points in three games — including a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds in Culver’s championship game against Oregon-Davis — leading the Cavs to their first tourney crown in more than 15 years and garnering MVP honors in the process.

Culver firemen test hovercraft on Maxinkuckee ice

January 24, 2011

Members of Culver's volunteer fire department braved the frigid temperatures Saturday morning as they test-drove a hovercraft privately owned by Dave Rayburn of Goshen. The craft, which would be custom-made for the department according to rescue and safety standards, would be used primarily for ice rescues if purchased. Funding for the purchase would come from both the department's town-based budget and the Union Township budget. Township Trustee Jerry Greason -- as well as Township board member Bill Githens -- was on hand to observe.

Bremen teachers' contract shelved for now

January 24, 2011

BREMEN — Teachers at the Bremen School Board meeting last Tuesday hoped to have approved a tentative contract they had reviewed with the school superintendent. What they found instead was a decision to table the agreement between the Bremen Educators Association (BEA) and the Bremen Public Schools for “further study” by the board.

Trojans top Culver for repeat title

January 24, 2011

LAKEVILLE — Triton is firing on all cylinders, and the Trojans have plenty of cylinders to fire with.
Class A, No. 3-ranked Triton continued its hot streak Saturday, working the ball inside-out, outside-in and every which way to keep Culver defenders off-balance while connecting at a 62.2 percent rate from the field en route to a convincing 65-54 win over the Cavs and a repeat Bi-County Basketball Tournament championship at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium.

Lady Cavs dethrone Oregon-Davis, 50-46

January 24, 2011

LAKEVILLE — Culver Community’s girls basketball team just wanted defensive stops against four-time defending Bi-County Tournament champion Oregon-Davis.
Given the Class A No. 4 Lady Cats’ 26-percent mark from the field and Culver’s 23-rebound surplus, mission accomplished.
Class 2A No. 7 Culver withstood foul trouble and a 7-of-19 fourth-quarter showing from the foul line to unseat OD and secure the program’s first Bi-County crown since 1995 in a 50-46 championship round slugfest Saturday at LaVille’s Dale E. Cox Gymnasium.

Six Rockies wrestlers place at NLC championships

January 24, 2011

PLYMOUTH — With only one win during the Northern Lakes Conference dual schedule, the Rockies had a lot of ground to make up at Saturday’s NLC Championship meet.
Led by IndianaMat.com No. 2-ranked Damon Howe’s championship finish in the heavyweight class, Plymouth placed a total of nine wrestlers in the top six Saturday, but couldn’t make up enough ground to shake up the final NLC standings as they beat out Concord but finished seventh, while Elkhart Memorial claimed the crown as expected at The Rock.

Lions take 3rd at Northern State Conference wrestling meet

January 24, 2011

ELKHART — It wasn’t a championship, but first-year Bremen head wrestling coach Shawn Campbell still got a little misty-eyed at the progress he’s seen his team make.
Jimtown won the championship on its home turf, but outsized Bremen won a moral victory, placing 13 of its 14 wrestlers in the top six for third place at the Northern State Conference Championships at Jimtown Saturday.

Plymouth crashes boards in NLC win over Wawasee

January 24, 2011

PLYMOUTH — Despite being down 6-foot-1 senior Marisa Green, Plymouth outrebounded Wawasee 35-18 — including an 11-2 advantage off the offensive glass —to beat their Northern Lakes Conference foe 45-36 at The Rock Saturday night.
With Green sidelined with an ACL tear — the second of her four-year career — Amber Redinger and Andria Shook stepped up in the front court while the rest of the team chipped in to help the Lady Pilgrims win the battle of the boards and their second straight NLC game.
