Customs and trends come and go, but in Culver as elsewhere, Valentine’s Day remains a day for presenting one’s sweetheart with flowers. This Valentine’s Day, as has been the case for a decade now, Elizabeth’s Garden is the place in Culver to facilitate that time-honored tradition.
The florist and gift shop, at 104 Plymouth Street, will celebrate its 10th anniversary here on April 9. Before Elizabeth (Beauchamp when she first opened, but Thompson since 2006) opened her business, it had been several years since Culver had a local florist.
PLYMOUTH — Coming off an upset by Elkhart Memorial last week, Warsaw was on a mission.
With star point guard Nick Moore sitting out the first quarter for disciplinary reasons, the Class 4A No. 8 Tigers got off to a relatively slow start, but once they got rolling they were impossible to stop. Warsaw went on a 20-0 rampage spanning the first 4:43 of the second half to put the game out of reach, going on to rout host Plymouth 72-27 in a Northern Lakes Conference contest at The Rock Thursday.
CULVER — Two basketball players in the Culver area were selected to Hoosier Basketball Magazine’s Top 100 seniors list.
Culver Community’s Gwen Zehner and Culver Girls Academy’s Kylee Shipley were both named to the annual list Thursday.
Players are chosen based on observation of games during the season as well as contact and discussion with numerous coaches, sportswriters, sportscasters and college recruiters throughout Indiana.
BOURBON — After splitting the Northern State Conference title with John Glenn last season, Triton has no intention of sharing this year’s championship.
With Thursday’s 67-42 win over Bremen, Class A No. 2 Triton (14-3 overall, 6-0 in Northern State) stayed perfect in conference play. With just one league game remaining, a solo title is within reach.
CULVER — Culver Community’s boys basketball team reclaimed the traveling bell from Argos Thursday.
Given the way the Cavs floundered down the stretch, though, the bell probably sounded a little less melodious.
Culver watched a 16-point fourth-quarter lead melt to four points in the final minute before hanging on for a 48-41 win over visiting Argos at John R. Nelson Gymnasium.
WARSAW — The Plymouth High School gymnastics team competed at Warsaw Thursday in just their second dual meet of the season, losing the varsity contest 98.3-86.25 but winning the JV contest 49.8-25.2.
While the loss dropped the Lady Pilgrims to 0-2 on the year, Plymouth still had some strong individual performances in the loss, led by its underclassmen. Freshman Nicky Davis continued her outstanding rookie campaign by taking home first place ribbons in all events except beam, where she finished second.

LaVille holds of Cougars
New Prairie scored 24 points in the final period, but LaVille was able to hold the visiting Cougars off 73-71 in a Northern State Conference basketball game Thursday night.
Four Lancers racked up double digits in the win, and Jordyn Williams and Andrew Hostetler both broke the 20-point mark with 27 and 23, respectively. Codee Kimbel and Trenton Stout each scored 10 as the Lancers moved to 9-7 overall and 3-3 in the NSC.

Culver-Union Township Public Library, located at 107 N. Main St., Culver, hosts longtime Culver resident, Culver High School graduate, and local historian Jim Harper, in honor of Black History Month, discussing his life and times.
There are two programs, one Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. for the young people in the Young Adult area of the library, and Saturday, Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. for the people of Culver and surrounding towns.

PLYMOUTH – Reality for a dream moved a step closer with the opening of bids for the Community Resource Center.
The building that will give a home to many of the counties social services agencies has been a dream of many in the community. The common home would allow pooling of resources and efforts of the agencies and allow them to more effectively pursue their missions. The bids opened at the Marshall County Historical Society Museum on Thursday afternoon moved the building one step closer to reality.
PLYMOUTH — Heartland Artist Gallery will be offering classes to the members and community.Â
Jayne Jacobson is offering an enameling class Saturday, Feb. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. She will teach the basic techniques of enameling. The class will be at her home and students will need a sack lunch. The class is limited in size so make reservations early. The cost is $30. Supplies will be provided.
