PHS grad Bayley and Grizzlies making appearance at NCAA Division III golf championship

FRANKLIN — Plymouth alumna Allison Bayley will join the Franklin College women’s golf team next week as its makes its return to the NCAA Division III Championship.
Franklin will compete in the 2012 nationals at Zollner Golf Course at Trine University in Angola beginning Tuesday. It is the first time since 2010 the Grizzlies qualified for a team berth to the tournament and the program’s fourth trip to the DIII finals overall.

Stumbling man in Walmart arrested for public intoxication

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth police were called to Walmart Thursday at 4:30 p.m. to check on a man than was having trouble walking and repeatedly falling down. Marvin R. Keyser, 57, of Knox, was found in a wheelchair smelling of an alcohol. Keyser was arrested for public intoxication and disorderly conduct.

Intoxicated 19-year-old arrested at library

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth police responded to a call Thursday that there was a female who appeared to be ill at the north end of the Plymouth Public Library. An officer arrived to check on the situation and found Alicia N. Lewis, 19, of Plymouth, who was crying. While speaking with Lewis, the officer smelled alcohol on her breath. A warrant check was performed and it was discovered that she had two outstanding arrest warrants. She was taken into custody.

Meet Mark Damore, Jr., a far less familiar face to Culverites than his father, Original Root Beer Stand owner Mark Damore, though Mark the younger is quick to emphasize he's "proud to be named after (my father)."

He's a Chicago native, Butler grad, and he wants the former Edgewater Grille to be the best restaurant in Culver.

UPDATE: Coroner says toxicology reports negative in Sunday's crash

PLYMOUTH — Marshall County coroner Bill Cleavenger released a statement Friday saying that final toxicology reports for Sunday's crash involving the death of former Marshall County Commissioner Donald E. Ferguson came back negative.
Cleavenger said he did not believe that alcohol or drugs were even a remote possibility in Ferguson’s death as a driver, but state law mandates such tests when a fatality occurs.

Music event Saturday will benefit baby, family

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth High School graduate of 1997, Chad Van Herk, has organized a fundraising concert for this Saturday at the Young Amphitheater in Centennial Park.
Local singer/songwriter Van Herk, who is also the manager of Culver’s First Farmers Bank and Trust, hopes to bring together local citizens, co-workers, friends and family members for an afternoon of mellow acoustic rhythms.

Spanish students learn by doing

PLYMOUTH — Mila's Mini Market was inundated by high school students Wednesday as Plymouth Spanish teacher Rick Button brought his classes in for a taste of Mexican food and culture.
The students ordered lunch in Spanish from Evelin Vargas, daughter of Mila's owners Mar and Celia Vargas. Evelin encouraged the students to follow their teacher's instructions to use their Spanish vocabulary, and wouldn't write down a request given to her in English. Instead, she waited for the student to find the Spanish words for what he wanted to say.

Lady Redskins sweep Lancers

LAKEVILLE — Knox got an emotional lift from its freshman No. 1 singles stand-in, and the Lady Redskins swept host LaVille 5-0 in a Northern State Conference girls tennis meet in Lakeville Thursday.
Brittany Fletcher filled in for usual No. 1 Shelby Gilbert, putting LaVille senior Brittney Haisley away 6-1, 6-2 in a quick two-setter for Knox’s first match point of the evening, and the Redskins went on to claim straight set wins on all courts.

Bettcher powers Lancers over Culver
Five different LaVille players finished with two RBI each, and the Lancers beat Culver 12-8 in a Northern State Conference game Thursday at Culver.
Ryan Bettcher went 4-for-5 at the plate with three stolen bases and three runs. He was one of five different Lancers who doubled, along with Quentin Herbster, Dalton Sauer, Anthony Singleton and Jason Duerring.
Culver fell behind 9-2 in the first two frames and never fully recovered. George Alvarado doubled and Collin Stevens took the loss on the mound.

South Michigan to close Sunday for demolition

PLYMOUTH — South Michigan street will be closed to traffic between East Lake Avenue and West LaPorte Street Sunday from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The closure is intended to protect the traveling public from possible debris coming from the demolition of the western wall of the Dimmitt building.
"We wish to thank the public for avoiding the closed area, which will safely expedite the demolition process and minimize the street closure time required," said city engineer Rick Gaul in a statement Wednesday.
