Hamlet’s Hoffer and Pokrajac break records on their way to Farm Bureau Tournament win

KOONTZ LAKE — The second event of the Indiana Farm Bureau Tournament Series was held Saturday at Koontz Lake and while the cold, rain, wind and threat of storms kept some anglers at home, record weights were brought to the scales. Hamlet’s Matt Hoffer and Ron Pokrajac brought the heaviest five-fish limit ever recorded in a Farm Bureau Series event to dominate the event. The scales registered 15.10 pounds when the bag of fish was weighed in, breaking the previous record of 14.17 pounds that was caught at Koontz Lake two years ago.

Season opens at Plymouth Speedway

PLYMOUTH — The roar of engines, the smell of race fuel with a hint of popcorn, and a chill in the air filled the Plymouth Speedway on opening night Friday.
It was an exciting night of racing that saw four drivers at the winner’s podium in the Outlaw Late Model, Late Model, Street Stock and Hornet classes.

He is survived by his parents, Matthew Bradley and Ryan Dille; a sister, Mariyah Bradley; a brother, Jaden Mettler; maternal grandparent, Rochelle Leslie of Rochester; and paternal grandparents, Judy Devona of Cedar Lake and Todd Bradley of Rochester.

Man killed in Sunday crash

BOURBON — Marshall County Coroner Bill Cleavenger released the name of the driver killed Sunday afternoon in a car/semi accident at US 30 and Cedar Road in Bourbon.
82-year-old Donald E. Ferguson, of Plymouth, was killed instantly late Sunday afternoon after his car was struck from behind by a semi trailer tanker truck on US 30 as Ferguson was making a right hand turn on to Cedar Road.
Cleavenger said that Ferguson's vehicle came to rest in a field on the south east corner of the intersection. Mr. Ferguson died at the scene from blunt force trauma.

Investigation ongoing in rape case

MARSHALL CO. — The Marshall County Sheriff's Department received a call shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday from a 21-year-old female who was on foot in the area of Rose Road and Mill Pond Trail.
Officers spoke with the woman and determined that non-consensual sex had occurred between her and Wayne M. Davis, 25, who lived nearby.
The investigation is still ongoing.

PHS Olympics to celebrate French language, culture

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth High School French teacher Monty Peden is going out with a bang as he and his students plan the last major event before his retirement — and before the end of French being offered at the school. Next year, Chinese will be a foreign language option for students in the place of French.
Peden’s students, as well as many other teachers and parent volunteers, are collaborating to hold “PHS French Olympics” May 6.
“We are modeling, as much as can at the high school level, the real Olympics,” said Peden.

Dir. of Operations new position at Union-North

LAKEVILLE — The Union-North School Board voted to establish a new position of Director of Operations over custodial staffs, transportation, grounds and maintenance for the 2012-2013 school year. During a meeting on April 26, the vote on the matter was 3-2 with members Dave Grenert, Dennis Graf, and Mike Berger voting in favor and Rob Swathwood and Mark Dickson voting in opposition. The newly created position will consolidate the Director of Maintenance and Director of Transportation duties into one.

Culver Community sophomore Kayla Shaffer broke her school’s 100-meter dash record with an 11.1-second finish during a dual Northern State Conference meet at Triton Thursday.
