Lady Chargers
eliminated in OT thriller
The Ancilla College women’s basketball saw their season come to an end in an overtime thriller, falling 63-56 at third-seeded Lake Michigan College in the opening round of the NJCAA District G Women’s Basketball Tournament in Benton Harbor, Mich. on Tuesday.
Rebecca Bunkowfst scored a career-high 23 points for Ancilla (8-17), connecting on her first seven attempts from beyond the arc to set a team record for three-pointers in a game.
PLYMOUTH — Up against an uptempo Mishawaka Marian squad and struggling to score, John Glenn slowed it down Tuesday.
But the Falcons still couldn’t convert, and the Knights stayed disciplined in the halfcourt, handing Glenn a season-ending 46-34 loss in the Class 3A Sectional 19 opener at Plymouth.
The Falcons scuffled to a 13-for-29 finish from the field, while Marian converted at a 50-percent, 17-for-34 clip for the win.
BOURBON — The magic that kept Oregon-Davis nipping at Westville’s heels evaporated in the fourth quarter.
After watching the Bobcats stay consistently within a possession or two during the third frame, Westville shot off 12 unanswered points to open the final stanza and shrugged off OD 70-54 in Class A Boys Basketball Sectional 50 first-round action at The Trojan Trench Tuesday.
Westville moves on to face Argos in the second semifinal Friday. Host Triton takes on South Central — a 59-50 winner over Marquette in Tuesday’s opener — in the first semifinal Friday at 6:30 p.m.
TOPEKA — A mix of age and youth helped keep LaVille’s season alive in Tuesday’s opening round of the Class 2A Westview sectional.
Senior Codee Kimbel and sophomore Nick Amor combined for 17 of LaVille’s 19 fourth-quarter points as the Lancers escaped with a 41-37 win over Jimtown.
Amor, who took a shot to the head late, scored 10 points in the final period to help put LaVille (12-9) in Friday’s 7:30 p.m. semifinal against No. 7 Westview (19-2).

Bluejays advance at Winamac
Class 2A No. 6 North Judson-San Pierre ran its record to 20 wins Tuesday with an 82-63 victory over Hebron in the Bluejays’ Winamac Sectional opener.
Four Jays finished in double figures led by John Eckert’s 26 points as Kendall Hochstedler scored 18, Andrew Frasure put up 16, and Winston Yergler had 13 for the night.
Hebron, which closes at 13-8, was led by Damon Wallace’s 23 points, followed by Matt McJunkin’s 11 and 10 points from Cody Artuso.
BREMEN — Within the next year, two local landmarks could be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Working with Bremen historian RT Henke, Plymouth architect and preservationist Kurt Garner hopes to secure the designation for the Bremen Depot and the town's water storage standpipe.
The honor comes with potential financial benefits.
"Being on the registry helps you in getting grants and so forth for future projects," Henke said. "In a lot of cases it gives you points, because it is an important consideration. This really is a good thing to do."

Early Monday morning, dozens of officers from area police agencies in Marshall County worked in collaboration to round up 21 individuals who were wanted on drug-related arrest warrants.
The Indiana State Police, in cooperation with the Plymouth Police Department, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and the Bremen Police Department, spent the better part of the early morning hours going door to door in search of the wanted individuals.

PLYMOUTH — Things are going well, even in difficult economic times.
That was the message in Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter’s “State of the City” address to the Common Council in its session last night.
Senter began his message praising the patience of Plymouth residents and the work of city employees.
In particular, Senter praised Plymouth Clerk-Treasurer Toni Hutchings for providing the city with a third straight balanced budget.

LAKEVILLE — The first time for an event can be the toughest, but the elements may have provided an even tougher obstacle to Newton Park’s Snoccer event this weekend.
“We had people asking us if we knew how tough it was to kick a ball in the snow — especially when it just stopped right where you kicked it,” said Irish Saunders of Hoosier Tire, one of the event’s organizers. “We ended up cutting down the time for a half to 15 minutes because it was so tough, but everybody had a great time and it was a great event.”
