PCSC discusses new Pathways program

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth School Board heard a report on Indiana Career Pathways Initiative during a meeting July 10. Presenting the information was Plymouth High School Guidance Counselor, Aimee Porttues. Portteus said that Indiana’s College and Career Pathways is “an aligned sequence of secondary and postsecondary courses that leads to industry certification or a college degree in a high wage, high demand occupation.” The Indiana Department of Education has set the 2013-2014 school year as the year for full implementation of the program.

ISTEP results 'record breaking' this year

MARSHALL CO. — Scores from standardized testing of Indiana’s students are being called “record breaking” following an announcement from the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Dr. Tony Bennett.
Bennett announced this week this is the third successive year of all-time highs on literally every portion of the ISTEP+ (Indiana Statewide Testing for Education Progress Plus) tests.
Making the announcement at a Statehouse recognition ceremony, Bennett said, “Hoosiers from all walks of like should greet this news with a standing ovation.”

Free soccer challenge Saturday for youth

PLYMOUTH — Children ages 8 to 13 have a fun opportunity this weekend to compete with their peers during the 2013 Ford Escape soccer skills challenge, a free event sponsored by Oliver Ford and held at the Plymouth soccerplex.
"Ford used to have a punt, pass, and kick contest 20 years ago, around football season," said Jennifer Houin of Oliver Ford. "Now, they told us they want to do a soccer challenge."
The event will be run by Duane Culp, president of Plymouth travel soccer, and Chuck DeWitt, Plymouth High School girls soccer coach.

Gallery exhibit benefits non-profit project

PLYMOUTH — The textiles currently being displayed at Heartland Art Gallery were created by textile artist, Dr. Judi-Aubel Osborn of Rome, Italy. Judi spends summers in Culver with her family creating beautiful textile designs. Many of the designs are replicated from observations of nature acquired from her numerous travels around the world. Residing in West Africa for 15 years has greatly influenced her designs by incorporating the artistic traditions of that area of the world. She uses various techniques of dying, printing and embroidery in making these patterns of nature come to life.

Hirschy takes over at Riverside

PLYMOUTH — A new principal for Riverside Intermediate School will be moving into the office as the new school year gears up, but the move will just be from one side of the building to the other.
Jeni Hirschy, current assistant principal, was named principal during the school board meeting Tuesday. Hirschy replaces outgoing Principal Donna Burroughs who has accepted a position with Triton Schools as superintendent.

CULVER — Excessive temperatures last weekend forced a rare cancellation of Culver Summer Schools’ annual Moonlight Serenade — or, to be more prescise, the event was “postponed,” according to Culver Upper Camp assistant director Emily Ryman, who announced the postponement Saturday night.
“Due to the extreme heat conditions aboard the Ledbetter,” she wrote, including “steel hull boat which has been baking in the 100 degree sun for the past four days...we have cancelled the Moonlight Serenade for this evening. We hope to re-schedule it for a later date.”

Bids opened for control system; Davidson says new video installed

PLYMOUTH — Bids were opened for the Influent Headworks Control System as the city council’s board of public works and safety met Monday evening.
Five bids were received and opened. All five met the requirements as follows: Form 96 was signed and completed; addenda were received; a financial statement was attached; a bid bond was attached; and the E-Verify affidavit was included.

BREMEN — Joseph R. Blakley, 67, of Bremen, went peacefully to be with Jesus Sunday, July 8, 2012 at his home. He was born Feb. 5, 1945 to Harold and Ruth (Jones) Blakley in Adrian, Mich. He married Sylvia Roebuck July 2, 1966.
Joseph honorably served his country in Vietnam. He worked for Universal Bearings in Bremen for more than 13 years. Joseph was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Bremen. He was also an avid golfer.
