Dodge, Country Auto Center help raise $2,140 for PHS Booster Program

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth High School students and families participated in a Dodge Booster Club Fundraiser July 21 and raised $2,140 for the school’s Athletic Booster Program. The Dodge brand contributed $20 for each test drive in a new 2012 Dodge Dart, Durango, Journey or Grand Caravan.
“The Dodge brand and our dealers are committed to giving back to the communities where we do business,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO- Dodge Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “That is why we’re proud to support organizations that encourage student development and growth.”

Saturday’s Stewart on dirt track tickets still available

PLYMOUTH — There are still tickets available to see three-time Nascar Champion Tony Stewart run the dirt track in the SOD wing sprint car race at the Plymouth Speedway Saturday.
Front and pit gates open at 2 p.m. with hot laps starting at 6 p.m. and opening ceremonies scheduled for 7 p.m.
Cost is $25 for adults, $8 for children 6-12, and children 5 and under get in free. Pit passes are $30.

Area fighters share card at MFL 26 this Saturday

SOUTH BEND — A number of area fighters will be featured at the Michiana Fight League 26 event at Coveleski Stadium in South Bend Saturday.
Plymouth’s John Popi and Dax Guericke will fight for titles at 185 and 125, respectively, while Knox’s Travis Smith and Brandon Shelhart will also compete in title bouts at 205 and 135. Derrick Duszynski will fight for the 170-pound title, while Plymouth’s Trent Keyser, Ed Johnson and Ricky Miller as well as Wesley Wickizer will also be featured on the 20-fight card.

Boys tennis
Lions fall to Concord
Bremen fell 4-1 in a dual boys tennis meet with visiting Concord Wednesday.
The Lions’ sole victory came at 2 doubles, where Krent Hueni and Tommy Foster blanked Aaron Allen and Riley Huffer in two 6-0 sets.
Jalen Bayer extended Matt Kotva to three sets at 2 singles but ultimately succumbed, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

BREMEN — Janet L. (Hons) Erickson, 68, of Bremen, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, at 4:30 p.m., at her home.
She is survived by her husband, Bernie Erickson; daughters, Dawn (Mark) Galloway of Culver, Jennifer Erickson of Denver, Colo.; sons, Greg (Kelley) Erickson of Plymouth, Chris (Veda) Erickson of Plymouth; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and her sister, Sandy Swenson of California.
Visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., at the Plymouth Wesleyan Church, 11203 S. Michigan Road, Plymouth.

MESA, Ariz. — Richard Allen Rowe of Mesa, Ariz. and formerly of Tippecanoe passed away Monday, Aug. 13, 2012 at 6:24 a.m. at Lutheran Hospital of Fort Wayne at the age of 69.
He was born May 4, 1943 in South Bend to the late Irene (Balmer) and Carel Rowe. In 1963 he was married to Carol Mowiser, who survives.

He is survived by a son, Kurt O. Lucas of Culver; daughter, Karen Sue Lucas of South Bend; brothers, Carl E. Lucas of North Judson, Paul E. Lucas of Speedway; sister, Carmen Benes of Plainfield; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

City K-9 officer Rex will enter retirement

PLYMOUTH — After a distinguished career, Plymouth’s K9 officer Rex will enter retirement.
Plymouth Police Chief Jim Cox made the announcement to the Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety in their regular meeting. Cox gave the Board the bad news that health was the reason for Rex’s retirement stating that the K9 officer was having difficulty with his eyesight, rear legs and hips and possibly had cancer.
The department will seek a home for Rex unless it is determined that he has cancer.
