PLYMOUTH â€”Â Several Plymouth High School Speech and Debate Team members traveled over the Memorial Day holiday weekend to compete in the NCFL (National Catholic Forensic League) tournament in Baltimore, Md. The contest, which attracted students from 775 high schools all across the country making up 2,705 competitors, is a difficult tournament that challenges all competitors through four preliminary rounds. There were 2,114 entries with over 250 per event.
LAKEVILLE â€” Current NASCAR Cup series champ Tony Stewart once again met with his fans to raise funds for Newton Park. All proceeds from the meet-and-greet and question-and-answer session Wednesday night with the NASCAR star will go to the park, and for the Little Hoosier 100, which will be held August 10 and 11 at Newton Park in Lakeville.
WARSAW â€” Plymouth and Triton hope to get a boost from their top flight status as the Warsaw Boys Golf Sectional gets underway Friday at Stonehenge.
The Pilgrims and the Trojans will tee off at 10 a.m. with meet favorite and host Warsaw as the top three seeds at the tourney, while Culver Military Academy vies with Tippecanoe Valley as the other teams predicted to be contenders for regional qualification, and Culver Community and Bremen will also compete among the 15-team field at Warsaw.
NAPPANEE â€” NorthWood High School basketball standout Jakyah Qaiyim has signed his letter of intent to play for the Ancilla College menâ€™s basketball program starting in the fall of 2012.
The 6â€™2â€ť, 185-pound Qaiyim averaged 12 points per game while shooting 57 percent during his senior year at NorthWood. Qaiyim also averaged six rebounds per game and was voted the Panthersâ€™ MVP this past season. He plans to pursue a degree in criminal justice at Ancilla.
â€śThe coaches and everyone I met at Ancilla were very nice,â€ť said Qaiyim. â€śThey recruited me hard and made it comfortable for me.â€ť
PLYMOUTH â€”Â Some former Stone Creek Homes employees in Plymouth and Central City, Nebraska were grateful to find that at least one week of the back pay they were due was deposited into their banking accounts Tuesday; but with no job to go back to, the future looks bleak.
At least four former employees were on salary and have not received any back pay.
PLYMOUTH â€”Â About five years ago, it used to be Angieâ€™s Junk Garden. Now, the antique shop at 1431 W. Jefferson St., just east of Dairy Queen and across from Family Express, is owned and operated solely by one man â€” Jonathan Stigler. The shop has no discernible name or hours of operation, but what is does have is an incredible collection of uncommon and distinctive antiques. Those lucky enough to stop by while Stigler is refinishing furniture, unloading new finds, or arranging haphazard displays usually find what they are looking for, said Stigler.
PLYMOUTH â€” Running nearly 3,000 miles is a feat for any athlete, but 18-year-old Rae Heim is taking it to the next level by hitting the road barefoot.
Heim, of Las Vegas, Nev., stopped in Plymouth this week for a quick break on her coast-to-coast run across America. She is staying with friends â€” and friends of friends of friends â€” along her journey in order to keep costs down. This week, she stayed with the Shidler family in Plymouth.

She is survived byÂ two daughters, Denise (Chris) Coffing of Macy, Merry Coleman of Rochester; two sons, Joe (Stacy) Gamble of Rochester, and Andrew Coleman of Florida; five grandchildren; two sisters, Barb Hunter of Macy, Melva Hunter of Macy; a brother, Steve (Carrie)Â Hunter of Rochester.

KNOX â€“ Katherine Diane (Ottow) Sallee, 57, passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at her home in Starke County after a long fight with cancer.
Kathy was born in Fort Mead, Maryland to Charles T. and Velma R. (Samuels) Ottow Sept. 30, 1954. She graduated from Plymouth High School with the Class of 1972.
Her husband Vince Sallee of Knox, has been her lifelong partner since the age of 15.
Kathy drove a bus for Starke County Schools for 17 years. She loved to scrapbook, ride horses and motorcycles with her husband.
