Encore season opens with 'Parrots' tonight

PLYMOUTH — Encore Performing Arts will open their season of entertainment this Friday evening with Ohio-based group “Parrots of the Caribbean.”
“(The group) is a salute to Jimmy Buffett,” said Encore director Deborah Gidley. “We had them last year for the first time and it went over really well. It was probably our best show from last season, so we decided to bring them back for this year.”

2 teens killed in bridge crash

PLYMOUTH — Two Plymouth High School students were killed Thursday night in a car crash on 12th Road.
Marshall County Coroner Bill Cleavenger released details on the violent crash that took the life of the boys who were students at PHS. 
Killed instantly were 16-year-old Vincent Cody Poczik, the driver, and his 16-year-old passenger Hunter Brandt, both of Plymouth.

Uceny coasts to semifinals at trials

EUGENE, Ore. — Even if she doesn’t talk about it, Morgan Uceny still has memories of being tripped during her World Championship race a year ago.
So, when it came to the preliminaries of the women’s 1,500-meter run at the U.S. Olympic Trials, she wasn’t taking any chances.
“Given my history, it makes me uncomfortable (to be back in the pack),” said Plymouth native Uceny after she led her prelim race almost from start to finish Thursday night.

Banfich named Academic All-American

PRINCETON, N.J. — Plymouth native and CGA alum Alex Banfich has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I Cross Country and Track & Field Team for Princeton College, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Banfich is a third-team selection to the Academic All-America team, and is the first from the program to earn the honor since Megan Brandeland was named third-team in 2009.

Freebies cost Diamond Spyders vs South Bend

PLYMOUTH — Post 27 battled back from an early deficit, but pitching woes cost the club late, and the Diamond Spyders succumbed to visiting South Bend Post 50, 8-5 at Bill Nixon Field Thursday.
Plymouth’s pitching staff surrendered a combined nine walks and a total of five hit batters, including four for three runs by the visitors during the decisive sixth and seventh innings.

Gurtner leads area golfers at age group championships
Bremen’s Zach Gurtner finished with a four-over-par 148 to tie for ninth in the boys 16 flight as the Indiana Golf Foundation Age Group Championships concluded on the Black Course at Indiana National in Plymouth Thursday.
Gurtner shot a 2-under 70 in Wednesday’s opening round and entered Thursday’s final round in second place before turning in a 78 to slip to ninth in the final standings.

Malibu Tanning plans Plymouth location

PLYMOUTH — Goshen-based Malibu Tanning plans to open their first Marshall County salon during late July or early August. The salon will be located at 1913 N. Michigan St., Suite 3, near Family Video and Kroger.
Office administrator Jessica Frederick said that a manager for the new store has already been hired, and the company will begin searching for staff locally in a few weeks. They will need about five employees to staff the salon. Frederick noted that employees must be at least 18 years old.

Bremen will go ahead with fireworks despite county ban

BREMEN — The town of Bremen is going ahead with a public fireworks display on July 4 as a part of their annual Bremen Firemen’s Festival. Rich Martin, Bremen director of operations, indicated that they have a number of safety measures planned including watering down the field in Sunnyside Park two hours before the 10:30 p.m. fireworks display. Martin said the town has 13 pieces of fire apparatus that will be on hand and they expect most, if not all, of the 28 volunteers and 10 substitute firefighters to be at the event.
He said, “The wooded area nearby is green and cooled.”

Home named on 'Historic Places' list

PLYMOUTH — Andrew Sporner, a Plymouth native, grew up passing by the Hoham-Klinghammer-Weckerle house at 1715 Lake Avenue often, and he always dreamed of buying it someday.
“I fell in love with it when I was five years old,” said Sporner, who did purchase the home in 2010. “Something about the way it looked kind of grabbed me.”

Six Bremen student-athletes attend IHSAA Student Leadership Conference

BREMEN — Six Bremen High School athletes attended the 9th annual IHSAA Student Leadership Conference. Over 700 student athletes, 150 adults, 40 speakers and 60 adult and student facilitators participated in the event held on June 19 at Plainfield High School.
