Pilot News Recipe of the Day: Falafel Sandwiches with Yogurt Sauce

These gyro-style sandwiches, made with chick peas and served in pita breads, bring Middle Eastern flavor to mealtime.

Prep Time : 1 hour
Makes 8 sandwiches

For Sandwiches

3/4 cup water
1/4 cup uncooked bulgur
1 can (15 oz) chick peas (garbanzo beans), drained, rinsed
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
4 medium green onions, sliced (1/4 cup)
1 tablespoon Gold Medal® all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons water
2 teaspoons ground cumin
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped

BREMEN — Wayne R. Hummel, 66, formerly of Bremen, died Sunday, July 14, 2013.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Hummel of Linden, Va.; one daughter, Penny (Gene) Cooper of Peru; three sons, George Hummel of Gainsville, Va., Roger Hummel and Michael (Ami) Hummel, both of Anderson; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Charlene (Tom) Guyse of Bremen.
A funeral service will be held at Mishler Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 2013. Burial will follow in the Bremen Cemetery.

ARGOS — Allen Eugene Quimby, 24, of Argos died July 13, 2013 at 9:37 a.m. at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center – Plymouth following a sudden illness.
He was born Jan. 13, 1989 in Plymouth to Ernest Lamar Quimby Jr. and MaLeta Bauman. He has lived in the Argos community all of his life.
He worked at McDonald’s in Argos.
He was a graduate of Argos High School class of 2007.
He served in the Indiana National Guard. Allen enjoyed his music and writing songs and spending time with the friends he had known since grade school.

New president named for Plymouth hospital campus

PLYMOUTH — Loretta Schmidt has been named President of the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center Plymouth Campus, according to a press release issued Tuesday.

With more than 20 years experience as a registered nurse, Schmidt’s background includes critical care, home care, emergency medicine, medical surgery, quality, accreditation, risk and department and executive leadership roles.

Gas line cut gets quick response

A construction mishap cut a gas line in the 600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue and Liberty Street in Plymouth about 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, prompting an emergency response.

Plymouth Fire Department and Police responded to the scene.

According to authorities, no evacuation was necessary at the site and the line was repaired quickly. Plymouth Police Chief Dave Bacon said NIPSCO arrived on the scene and released all emergency personnel.

Pilot News Recipe of the Day: Baked Kale Chips

Original recipe makes 6 servings

1 bunch kale
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon seasoned salt


Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a non insulated cookie sheet with parchment paper.

With a knife or kitchen shears carefully remove the leaves from the thick stems and tear into bite size pieces. Wash and thoroughly dry kale with a salad spinner. Drizzle kale with olive oil and sprinkle with seasoning salt.

Bake until the edges brown but are not burnt, 10 to 15 minutes.

NOBLESVILLE — Howard C. Box, 71, of Noblesville, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013 at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville. He was born Oct. 28, 1941 to Norris and Hazel (Minchew) Box in McArthur, Ark.
Howard was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He will be missed by all. He worked at Vibromatic as a metal machinist before retiring after 50 years. He was a 1959 graduate of Noblesville High School where he was inducted into the Athletic Department Hall of Fame for the 1958 undefeated football season.

Jorjanna was born Oct. 2, 1963, in Fort Dix, N.J., to Robert B. and Lottie J. (Hibbard) Jernigan. Jorjanna became the bride of James Miller, in La Paz, on Oct. 12, 2006. She worked at Volcano Pizza in Elkhart, and was a member of the Maxinkuckee Rebekah Lodge #844.
