ARGOS â It is garden time again in Argos. For the second year, the town will sponsor a community vegetable garden, thanks to the Town Council and clerk-treasurer Patty Jones, who spearheads the project.
Last year marked the inauguration of the local fresh produce source for town residents. âThe farmersâ markets in Culver and Plymouth are too far away for some residents to take advantage of,â said Jones. âOthers might not have the money to spend on fresh vegetables,â she added. Thus was born the Argos Community Garden.
Finding a location was a hurdle at first. Finally, the water department Chief Operator Nick Wood said: âWhy donât you use the yard right outside the water department fence? Itâs not being used for anything, and we can provide a convenient source of water. As a result, the garden plot of roughly ÂŒ acre is located behind the municipal building and between the water tower and the water department (see photo). The water department also installed a faucet at the edge of the plot for convenient watering.
The next hurdle was soil. The soil of the garden was hard and difficult to till, much less plant. A friendly volunteer bulldozed the soil and gravel off to the side, and loads of good topsoil were donated and spread.
Then, there was the purchase of the plants, fertilizer, tools, and other necessities. Last year, these were provided ad hoc by interested individuals. The garden project was begun, although not easily.
This year, things are much improved, according to Jones. She insists that the project is not hers alone, but is a joint effort of the town. The plot is already prepared for a garden. She is asking for donations of plants (not seeds). She plans to grow potatoes in an innovative container method which will save garden space for other vegetables. She will grow several different types of plants, and asks that you call her at the Clerkâs office to see what plants she needs. She is requesting no money donations to avoid having to account for money spent. The Town Council, however, voted to give her $200 from the promotional fund, which benefits the entire town.
Unlike some community gardens in which residents are assigned a small space and must then tend their own little garden, the Argos garden is communal. That is, vegetables will be grown en masse, and will be free to anyone who needs them. Jones and other volunteers will maintain and water the garden, and those harvesting vegetables are asked to deal with weeds as they see them.

The Marshall County Coronerâs Office and Marshall County Sherriffâs Department are investigating the death of a Plymouth woman that occurred as a result of a traffic accident Tuesday afternoon before 4 p.m.
In a press release sent late Tuesday, by Marshall County Deputy Coroner Lisa Richards, Amber Gayheart, 23, of Plymouth, was pronounced dead at the scene of the single vehicle accident near the 11000 block of Lincolnway.
Gayheart was the only occupant of the car.
Richards and Deputy Coroner John Grolich are conducting the death investigation.

PEYTON, Colo. â Helen Louise Wright, 95, Peyton, Colo. formerly of Bourbon went to be with Dale at 11:30 p.m. April 15, 2013 at Life Care Center of Colorado Springs.
Helen was born Jan. 31, 1918, in Bourbon to Harvey and Pearl Parks Byrer. On May 12, 1935 she married Dale Edward Wright who preceded her in death Jan. 19, 2006. They had 71 years of marriage and organized the Golden Butterflies club in Golf Lakes Estates, where they spent their last 31 winters.

ARGOS â Harold Dimmitt Warner, 93, of Warsaw, formerly of the Argos community died May 4, 2013 at 11:55 p.m. at Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw following a sudden illness.
He was born Dec. 4, 1919 in Escondido, Calif. to Vernon T. and Leila (Dimmitt) Warner.
He had lived with his daughter in Warsaw for the past eight months, but had spent his whole life in the Argos community.
On Feb. 29, 1939 in Argos, he married Velma Lucille Heims.
Norman Bennett

SPENCER â Norman Bennett, 90, of Spencer, formerly of Ora, died Sunday, May 5, 2013.
He is survived by his children, Terry Bennett of Spencer, Leon Bennett of Plymouth, Bradley Bennett of Pittsfield, Ill.; two brothers, Dean Bennett of Plymouth, Maurice Bennett of Lake Placid, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will take place Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at 1 p.m. EDT at the Alexander Heinemann Cemetery, Ora.
M.C. Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ARGOS â Brave special education students from Marshall County entered the Dragonsâ lair Friday as Argos High School hosted the first annual Dragon Olympics.
For five hours the eager athletes threw, kicked, ran, balanced, and pulled trying to win glory for their school. The real glory came, however, as they tested their mental and physical skills and stretched their capabilities to the fullest, spurred on by the cheers of their peers.
PLYMOUTH - The project to extend 7th Road in Marshall County continues.
In current plans 7th Road will become the major interchange for the city of Plymouth with the new U.S. 31 currently under construction.
That plan includes the linking of 7th Road eventually with Pine Road on the city's west side to create a single connection between new U.S. 31 and U.S. 30 just north of Plymouth.
PLYMOUTH - While it may not have been the complete ban that some were hoping for, on Monday the Marshall County Commissioners ruled on a revised ordinance regarding wind farms that had been tabled at a previous meeting.
PLYMOUTH â Two days after shaving 18 strokes off their front side score for a new nine hole season-low at Orchard Ridge, Plymouthâs boys golf team pared off another four strokes Monday.
But Mishawaka Marianâs Matt Rozyckâs posted a field-best even-par 36, and the Pilgrimsâ season-best 157 fell a stroke short of the Knights as Plymouth split with Marian and John Glenn in a three-way meet at the Silver Course at Indiana National.
While Rozyck carded a 36 in the second flight for Marian, teammate Michael Makris came in just a stroke behind him at 37.
WARSAW â A good weekend turned into a blue Monday for Plymouthâs Pilgrims as they took the road to Warsaw to fall to the Tigers (9-7) by a 7-1 final in an NLC battle.
Splitting games in their annual weekend tourney with Ft. Wayne Wayne and Penn had Plymouth feeling good about heading into a long week of games, but Warsaw pitcher Jason Ferguson made that good feeling go away with a masterful performance on the mound for the Tigers.
