1st Annual Pilgrim Boys Basketball Golf Outing

PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth High School boys basketball team will hold its first annual Pilgrim Boys Basketball Golf Outing on Saturday, Aug. 24 at the Plymouth Country Club. The outing will commence with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.
Cost is $80 per golfer or $320 per foursome. There is a reduced price of $70 per golfer for any former Pilgrim player or coach.

Spyders win one, lose one at sectional

Plymouth Post 27 got off to a 1-1 start at the American Legion Baseball Sectional at Bill Nixon Field on Friday and Saturday.
Post 27 opened with a 12-1 loss to Highland Post 180 but bounced back with a 7-4 win over Mishawaka Post 161. Complete results from the tournament were not available at time of press deadline, but the Diamond Spyders will be eligible to play in the regional tournament this weekend as hosts of that tourney.

WALKERTON — Ray Louis Beyler, 82, of Walkerton, passed away in Miller’s Merry Manor, Walkerton, on Thursday, July 18, 2013, at 6:14 p.m. following an extended illness.
Ray was born in Plymouth on July 5, 1931, the son of Cecil T. and Wilma Grace (Baker) Beyler, now deceased.
On Jan. 27, 1956, in Mesa, Ariz., Ray and his wife, Dolores Mae Bowers, who survives, were married. They have experienced 57 wonderful years together.

PLYMOUTH — Carol A. Madonna, 74, of Plymouth, and formerly of Knox and Argos, died in the Pilgrim Manor Care Center, following an illness, at 8:10 a.m. Thursday, July 18, 2013.
She is survived by three sisters, Esther M. Sheeks, Rochester, Joyce (Richard) Kolar, Argos and Jean (Arthur) Eskridge, McHenry, Ill.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, July 22, 2013, at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services will follow visitation at 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.

Pilot News Recipe of the Day: Layered Fruit and Yogurt Salad

Fruit with creamy yogurt is a delicious combination.

Prep Time 15 minutes Total Time 15 minutes
Servings 8

Ingredients

1 container (6 ounces)key lime pie flavored yogurt
2 tablespoons orange juice
2 cups fresh pineapple chunks
1 cup strawberry halves
2 cups green grapes
1 cup blueberries
2 cups cubed cantaloupe
1/4 cup flaked or shredded coconut, toasted

Directions:

Mix yogurt and orange juice; set aside.

In 2 1/2-quart clear glass bowl, layer fruit in order listed. Pour yogurt mixture over fruit. Sprinkle with coconut. Serve immediately.

Pilot News Movie Review: Turbo

The new animated film “Turbo” opened this past Friday, July 19, and features a racing-savvy snail gain increased speed following a freak accident. Like its miniscule protagonist, “Turbo” demonstrates great ambition in the special effects department and overall presentation, but is encumbered by a formulaic storyline, so-so dialogue, and a lack of innovation in comparison to previous animated movies.

BREMEN — Nancy R. Slavey, 73, of Bremen died Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at IU Health Goshen.
She is survived by two sons, Thomas (Betty) Slavey of Nappanee and Jeffrey Slavey of Bremen; five grandchildren; a sister, Karen (Walt) Meyer of New Bern, N.C.; and two brothers, Bill (Joyce) Husmann of Union City and John Husmann of Long Beach, Calif.

Car show, concert featured at today's 'Music in the Park' event

PLYMOUTH— Spike and the Bulldogs will perform in today’s Music in the Park Concert, provided by Encore Performing Arts.

This week’s concert also includes Car Cruise-In featuring classic and show cars prior to 2000. Registration for the show begins at 4 p.m. Car show opens at 5 p.m.

At 7 p.m. Spike and the Bulldogs will take the stage in the Young amphitheater in Centennial Park. Tickets are $10 for adults. Students and children are free.

Local company recognized by state

PLYMOUTH - A local company has been honored with a state award.

Kessler Crane - a Marshall County company that makes camera support equipment for the film industry - was named as one of Indiana’s “Companies to Watch” for this year.

The accolade, presented by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, the Indiana Small Business Development Center network and the Edward Lowe Foundation, recognizes the state’s privately held businesses that employ six to 150 full-time employees and have between $750,000 to $100 million in annual revenue or capital.

Bremen businessman testifies before Congressional subcommittee

WASHINGTON D.C. - A local businessman was the voice of small business - in particular manufacturing - before the Small Business Subcommittee on Agriculture, Energy and Trade.

J.B. Brown, President of Bremen Castings was a member of a panel of experts testifying on Thursday morning regarding the affect proposed Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations will have on his company and other small businesses around the country. The Committee was examining the impact of the compliance obligations in the EPA’s proposed Regulatory Flexibility Act.
