Pilgrims advance; Falcons fall

PLYMOUTH — One local team’s defensive struggles are sending them home for the offseason, another’s defensive prowess will give them a shot at a sectional title as Glenn fell to South Bend St. Joe by a 63-49 final and Plymouth won a classic with Marian 59-57 at the Plymouth Sectional on Friday.

Trojans beat Culver, head to final

CULVER — And the award for best supporting cast goes to Triton’s boys basketball team.
With senior starters Clay Yeo and Seth Glingle saddled with third-quarter foul trouble, the Trojans actually extended their advantage and pulled away in the fourth frame for a 44-32 win over host Culver Community in Class A Sectional 51 semifinal action at John R. Nelson Gymnasium Friday.
No. 10 Triton shoots for its sixth straight sectional crown tonight at 6:30 p.m. against No. 8 Michigan City Marquette, an 81-46 victor over Westville in Friday’s nightcap.

Lancers beat advance to Westview championship with win over Prairie Heights

TOPEKA — LaVille head coach Michael Edison wasn’t wholly satisfied with his players’ defensive effort in their sectional-opener Wednesday night, even after it resulted in a comfortable 58-42 win over Fremont.
The Lancers went back to the drawing board at practice Thursday, and Prairie Heights paid the price Friday.

No major ordinance change suggested for wind turbines

PLYMOUTH — After being tabled for a month, when presented with an array of additions and amendments to current ordinances, the Marshall County Plan Commission decided not to take any action that would essentially keep wind turbines and farms out of the county.

With attorney Steve Snyder, Syracuse, representing, a group of concerned citizens drafted a series of changes to current ordinances in the county regarding wind turbines.

They ranged from sound issues to setting longer distances from property lines, churches, schools and more.

KNOX — Korben P. Husband, 8 weeks, died Feb. 27, 2013 in IU Health Starke Hospital, Knox. Survivors include his parents, Donald Husband and Alicia Singleton; one sister, Josephine Rowe; one brother, Johnny Rowe and grandparents, Nicholas and Kathleen Husband, both of Knox.

PLYMOUTH — Frank Polletta, 85, peacefully entered eternal life at 6:10 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, in Miller’s Merry Manor Plymouth.
He was born at home in Steger, Ill., on March 17, 1927, the son of Frank and Asunta (Stella) Polletta.
He graduated from Bloom High School in Chicago Heights, Ill., and enlisted in the United States Navy, serving during WWII and was honorably discharged Aug. 2, 1946.

According to presenters at an event last Thursday, chances are a mass shooter at a local school, business, or public place will already have departed, committed suicide, or been disarmed by a bystander before law enforcement agencies arrive at the scene -- in which case, civilians need to think ahead and plan, should the worst take place.

Eagles fall to Marian; No. 6 Pilgrims romp over Jimtown

PLYMOUTH — Turnovers were the name of the game at Thursday’s rescheduled round one Class 3A Sectional basketball games at Plymouth.
Culver Military surrendered too many during a second-quarter spurt by Marian en route to an eventual 64-39 loss to the Knights, and the No. 6-ranked Pilgrims capitalized on them in a 59-33 romp over Jimtown in the late game.
Plymouth takes on Mishawaka Marian in the late semifinal tonight at Plymouth following an earlier contest between John Glenn and St. Joseph at 6 p.m.

7th grade girls basketball
Lincoln 7th advances in NELMSC tourney
The Lincoln seventh grade girls basketball team advanced in the first round of the Northeast Lakes Middles School Conference Tournament, defeating Indian Springs 35-13.
Leading scorers for the Red Storm were Leena Tetzloff and Alli Andrews with six points apiece.
Lincoln plays Saturday at Indian Springs to finish out the tournament.

PLYMOUTH — Frank Polletta, 85, of Plymouth, died Wednesday morning in the Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred E. (Laudanskis) Polletta; a daughter, Barbara (Greg) Fox; a daughter-in-law, Barbie Polletta; a sister-in-law, Alice Hite and numerous grand and great-grandchildren.
