Bremen freshman running back Grant Klockow celebrated his career-first start with a game-leading 76 yards on 11 rushes with a touchdown during the Lionsâ€™ NSC win over Triton Friday.
NorthWoodâ€™s Heidi Morganthaler won her second straight individual NLC championship with an 8-over 79 at Maplecrest Saturday to help lift her team to a repeat team title.
NEWCASTLE, England â€” Morgan Uceny earned a much-needed victory Saturday when she captured a high-stakes one-mile road run at the Great North City Games in Newcastle, England.
The 2003 Plymouth High School graduate â€” a member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team â€” clocked 4:33.97, surging away from a 13-runner field in the last 200 meters. Itâ€™s her first victory in a major race since winning the womenâ€™s 1,500-meter run at the Olympic Trials a year ago.
Uceny defeated several runners that she competed against at the London Olympics. Great Britainâ€™s Laura Weightman finished second in 4:34.63.
Bremen wins NSC
Bremenâ€™s girls golf team won the Northern State Conference championship on Saturday at the Lady Lionsâ€™ home course at Sprig Oâ€™Mint, beating out second-place John Glenn 375-389.
Glennâ€™s Anna Schmeltz was the tournament low-medalist with a score of 86.
Triton finished in fourth with a 454 behind New Prairieâ€™s 447, while Knox was fifth with a score of 476, and LaVilleâ€™s Whitney Brown shot a 95.
The Lady Lions were led by Alex Homannâ€™s 90 followed by dual 93s from Kaitlyn Ahlenius and Melissa Krathwohl and Kayleigh Dailyâ€™s 99. Jamie Stafford shot 113.

ROCHESTER â€”Â June L. Vrana, 88, of Rochester, died at 3:27 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at Parkview Regional Medical Center of Fort Wayne.
She is survived by a daughter, Jill (Paul) Ervin of Dayton, Ohio; a son, Jack (Kathy) Vrana of Angola; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sister, Alice (Tom) Sroufe of Macy.

KOONTZ LAKE â€” Stephen M. Werner, 63, of Renfrew, Pa., formerly of Koontz Lake passed away Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013 in his home. Steve was born June 25, 1950 in Fort Wayne. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the Walkerton American Legion Post #189.

GOSHEN â€”Â Dale Ewers, 38, of Goshen passed away Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013 at Memorial Hospital of South Bend. He was born in Stockton, Calif. to Russell and Kelly (Vanderzanden) Ewers on March 13, 1975.
Dale enjoyed working for Kik Corporation and staying active in his gym. He also enjoyed attending concerts, bicycling, traveling, and animals. Dale is remembered as being fun loving and friendly, with a desire to help those around him. He was a â€śbig brotherâ€ť to everyone and often provided a listening ear when needed.
PLYMOUTH â€” Thereâ€™s a commonly held belief among soccer cognoscenti that the most dangerous minutes in a game are those at the start of a contest, those that directly follow a goal and those that immediately precede halftime.
That certainly proved to be the case in Plymouthâ€™s girls soccer game with Goshen Thursday.
