Area athletes named to IBCA Academic All-State Honorable Mention rolls

INDIANAPOLIS — Three area boys and five girls players made the honorable mention list as the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association released its Academic All-State nominations for the 2012-13 season.
On the boys’ side, Bremen’s Jacob Box, John Glenn’s Nathan Stegemiller, and Plymouth’s Gabe Vervynckt all earned the Academic All-State HM distinction, while for the girls, Triton’s Breanna Lemler, Glenn’s Carah Ochs, Knox’s Chelsea Collins, North Judson’s Jordann Frasure, and NorthWood’s Maddie Schwartz were named to the HM list.

2 state titles special, even for storied CMA

CULVER — “It’s always great when your school gets to bring home a state championship, but it’s really something special when your guys can bring home two state championships.”
That simple, understated sentence from Culver Military Academy varsity B hockey coach Alex Mies pretty much perfectly summed up the school’s accomplishment at the Indiana State High School Hockey Association’s Invitational Tournament last Saturday.

RIVERDALE, Ill. — William Kranenburg, age 95, of Riverdale, Ill., formerly of Koontz Lake, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013.
He leaves behind his wife of 29 years, Dorothy; his four children, Bill (Marie) Kranenburg of Grovertown, Elsa (Jack) Finwall of Schererville, Carol (Stan) Beem of Clermont, Fla., and Pat (Linda) Kranenburg of Grovertown; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his wife Helen (1983), also his brothers Dan, John, Tuenie, and his sister Min Aardema.

Earthworks to be vendor for new local Whole Foods store

PLYMOUTH - One local market has a big reason to be celebrating St. Patrick’s day in a big way.
Earthworks Market will be celebrating the normal holiday along with the news that they will also be forming a partnership with one of the nation’s top food chains, Whole Foods. The soon to be opening Mishawaka Whole Foods will feature bread from Earthworks.
“We applied to be one of their local vendors,” said Sr. Sue Rogers of Earthworks. “We had to go through the regular process, meet with their regional managers and the bottom line is we were accepted.”

Group protests Michiana Behavioral Health

PLYMOUTH -- A small group of people gathered near the intersection of U.S. 30 and Oak Road around 5 p.m. Thursday to protest a local mental health facility.
Dominique Smith of South Bend, who identified herself as the group’s spokesperson, said that she and the others present are protesting “the fact that Michiana Behavioral Health remains understaffed and unsafe.”

PHS athletic officials, coaches welcome challenge in wake of new classification

PLYMOUTH — Although Plymouth may have jumped up a class under the 2014-15 IHSAA reclassifications, athletic officials and coaches at the school are determined not to let expectations drop.

Bremen’s Pike signs with Judson

BREMEN — One of Bremen’s best has signed on to continue his basketball career at Judson University next season.
After singing on with the Christian liberal arts university located in Elgin, Ill. last week, Lions senior Ethan Pike will play for the Eagles beginning in the winter of 2014. Judson is an NAIA school competing in the Chicagoland Athletic Conference.

Plymouth native Starr is NAIA All-America HM

ATLANTA, Ga. — Plymouth alumna Alex Starr was honored by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association after leading Purdue University Calumet’s offense in her senior season as the WBCA released its 2012-13 NAIA Coaches’ All-America Team on Tuesday evening.
Starr was one of 29 student-athletes honored by the WBCA, earning Honorable Mention All-America accolades.

Picket planned for Michiana Behavorial Health tonight

Claims of a local facility housing sex offenders with other patients are being levied and a protest is planned for tonight.
Plymouth Police were informed that a group would be picketing Michiana Behavioral Health on Oak Road in Plymouth tonight from 5 to 7 p.m.
A former nurse at the facility, who asked to be unidentified as to avoid blow back from being a "whistleblower", said the facility went against its own stated policy when it housed known sex offenders with other patients.
The nurse claims the move was one to save money and that documentation is available to prove those claims.
