Man killed by train in Nappanee

November 7, 2013

NAPPANEE — Patrick O. Circle, of Nappanee, was killed at approximately 10:36 p.m. Wednesday night after being struck by a train near the intersection of Madison Street, according to a police press release issued Thursday morning.

An investigation is ongoing and includes CSX officials and the Elkhart County Coroner's office. Foul play is not indicated.

Circle died of blunt force trauma. Toxicology reports are pending.

John Glenn Schools outline strategy to improve test scores

LaVille Schools to close tomorrow

November 6, 2013

LAPAZ/LAKEVILLE — LaVille Elementary and the Jr./Sr. High School will be closed all day, Thursday, Nov. 6.

The reason for the closure is related to septic issues, as stated at the recent school board meeting. The closure was confirmed Wednesday afternoon in an email from Principal John Farthing.

Logan Alan Greene, 33, passed away Nov. 1, 2013 at 6:30 a.m.
He was born on April 12, 1980 in Plymouth to Carl “Greg” Greene and Heidi Reece.
He is survived by his son, Malachi Greene, Tippecanoe; his parents, Carl “Greg” (and spouse Lisa) Greene, Warsaw and Heidi (and spouse Mike) Reese, Culver; his sister, Denise Greene, Plymouth and two brothers, Jason Miller, North Manchester and Matt Miller, Warsaw.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kyra Shay Greene.

PLYMOUTH — Louellen K. Kowatch, 55, of Plymouth passed away Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013 at Hospice House of South Bend.
Louellen was born Nov. 6, 1957 in Culver, one of three children born to Charles and Mildred (Clingler) Weiger Jr. Growing up she loved animals, having pet ducks. She was a choir member in high school and described herself as a lifetime Girl Scout and Trainer. She loved singing and working arts and crafts.

Bakery boasts ghosts

If you visit Mrs. T's Bakery one morning and happen to witness the ghostly vision of a lady in pink at the coffee maker, don't be surprised.
The apparition is nothing scarier than an elderly women who used to visit the shop with a group of women every morning at 9 a.m.
"When she passed, she wanted us to come out to the grave and have coffee with her, because that was the highlight of her day," Rhonda Triplet, owner of Mrs. T's Bakery, said.

Emu eggs on display at the library

In the entryway of the Bremen Public Library each month is a different exhibit for readers to explore. This month viewers may notice a unique collection of eggs and books, all from and about the Emu.
The collection comes from the home of Randy and Hilde Kraft, former owners of Drumming Bird, Ltd., in Denver, Colo. who now reside in Bremen.
