ROCHESTER — Nikki Lynne Foster Powell, 69, of Rochester, died at 4:25 p.m., Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at St. Elizabeth Central, Lafayette.
She is survived by her husband, Jon; two daughters, Michelle Morgan and Leslee (Glenn) Goss; a sister, Shari (Jim) Hartzler all of Rochester; and five grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 6 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2013 in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Visitation is from 3-6 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.

New research on concussions raises new questions

PLYMOUTH — Tragedy has brought the topic to the forefront, and preventing further tragedy has spurred greater research into sports concussions and their effect on long-term health.
It is a topic that is as important to local parents as it is in the NFL, and specialists from all over the world met recently in Zurich, Switzerland — at the headquarters of FIFA, the international governing body of soccer — to discuss recent research and developments in dealing with the problem in sports.

College softball
Ancilla softball splits home opener
The Ancilla College softball team split a doubleheader with Kellogg Community College, winning the first game 9-4 and losing the second game 7-6.
The doubleheader was the Lady Chargers’ first games after returning home from their spring trip in Florida and their first games in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western Conference.
Courtney Clark picked up the win in game one pitching the complete game and allowing just two earned runs and striking out four.

DONALDSON — Edward Julius Krason, 87, passed away Monday, March 25, 2013 at his residence in the Maria Center apartments, a part of The Center at Donaldson sponsored by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ in Donaldson. He has made his home there since 2003 and was a former resident of St. Paul’s Retirement Center in South Bend.
A Navy veteran, Edward had also served as a Roman Catholic priest in the communities of Ft. Wayne, Huntington, Decatur, Garrett and Goshen.

PLYMOUTH — Gladys Marie Kuhn, 69, of Plymouth died at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013 in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka, following a brief illness.
She is survived by a daughter, Rhonda Jo Overmyer of Plymouth; a son, Michael D. (Jackie) Overmyer of Bremen; two grandchildren; two brothers: Kenneth L. (Betty) Steininger of Rochester and Cledith D. (Sarah) Steininger of Gary; and a sister, Edith Kay (Gary) Heishman of Ft. Wayne.

Candlelight vigil for child abuse awareness planned

MARSHALL CO. — Department of Child Services offices statewide will be holding candlelight vigils to raise awareness for child abuse April 16.
Local DCS director Michael Carroll said that the public can expect to see more of these types of events, as his office seeks to increase community participation in the fight against abuse.
“The whole purpose (of the April 16 candlelight event) is to engage local leaders and stakeholders, to recognize those affected by child abuse, and to generate positive local media coverage for DCS,” said Carroll.

PLYMOUTH — A local mental health facility is under the microscope following a string of protests from past employees.
March 14, a group of former employees picketed near Michiana Behavioral Health located on Oak Road in Plymouth. These individuals held signs claiming that the facility is understaffed, causing an unsafe work environment.

Yeo among 9 state finalists invited to Top 60 Workout

BOURBON — In the latest laurel for Clay Yeo, the Triton senior has been invited to participate in the Hoosier Basketball Magazine Top 60 Workout.
Yeo will be among nine players who competed at the 2013 IHSAA State Finals, along with Carmel’s James Crowley and Michael Volovic, Bowman Academy’s Antonio Pipkin, Borden’s Jalen McCoy, Indianapolis Cathedral’s Collin Hartman, Fort Wayne Concordia’s Thomas Starks and Linton’s Dess Fougerousse and Austin Karazsia.

Lady Lions win at Washington
Bremen put up four runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back for a 7-2 season-opening victory in a game moved from Bremen to South Bend Washington Thursday night.
Chelsea Huppert got the complete-game win, giving up five hits and four walks with 12 strikeouts for the Lady Lions.
Meagan Stouder powered Bremen at the plate with a 3-4 performance that included a double, two RBI and two runs scored. She also notched a stolen base in the win.
