INDIANAPOLIS - The filing of a WARN notice by Whitley Products may signal the ultimate end of the company but by doing so workers will have at least a little help.
The Federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) act was passed in 1988 and part of that law requires that companies that have 100 or more employees file a 60 day notice of any plant closing or mass layoff. The notice is given to employees and filed with the Indiana Department of Work Force Development.
PERU â€” The Plymouth High School gymnastics team wrapped up its season Thursday night at Peru in a four-way meet also featuring Marion and top 10-ranked Logansport.
Logan topped all three of the other teams by posting a 107.1, and Plymouth defeated Peru and Marion 100.5-79 and 100-86.5, respectively.
The Pilgrims were led by their state-ranked duo of sophomore Cassi Quissell and junior Nicky Davis.
Quissell placed third in every event except bars, where she captured a second behind the No. 7-ranked bars gymnast in the state, freshman Kelly Platt of Logansport.
PLYMOUTH â€” The Plymouth Athletic Department will be losing a Hall of Famer next month.
Assistant Athletic Director Mary Beth Hunter has been a part of Plymouth High School athletics since 1980. She was inducted into the Indiana High School Tennis Hall of Fame in 1995 as both a player and a coach.
PLYMOUTH â€” Plymouthâ€™s boys basketball team received two first-team All Northern Lakes Conference selections and one honorable mention pick as the league announced its all-conference nominations Thursday.
Senior guard Joe Knapp and junior forward Mack Mercer were both named to the All-NLC first team, while senior guard David Lee was given all-conference honorable mention.
NorthWood juniors Jonathan Wilkinson and Zach Zurcher were both named to the All-NLC first team as well.

PLYMOUTH â€” Stephan H. Gonce Jr., 45, a lifetime Plymouth resident, died at 3:05 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2013 in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, following an extended illness.
The son of Stephen H. Sr. and DiAnne King Gonce, Steve was born Feb. 3, 1968 in Plymouth. He was a 1986 graduate of Plymouth High School.
On July 16, 1994, Steve married his wife, Melinda, in their back yard.
Steve had been employed at Flexible Technologies for 17 years, until his illness.

BREMEN â€” David A. Zumbaugh, 63, a lifetime Marshall County resident, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013.
Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 22 from 4 - 7 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 in the Teegarden First Brethren Church, 16518 1st Road where calling will resume after 9 a.m. until time of services.
Burial will be in the Morris Cemetery west of LaPaz.
Preferred are memorial contributions to the church.

BOURBON â€” This weekend you have the opportunity to see a preview of Triton studentsâ€™ Destination ImagiNation challenges before the March 9 regional competition.
â€śThe kids are pretty much going to run through what they will do at the regional tournament,â€ť said Lisa Eiser, DI coordinator at Triton Schools. â€śSo many people donâ€™t understand Destination ImagiNationâ€¦we hope that by letting the public see what we do, they will understand it more.â€ť

Whitley Products has officially filed notice as part of the Federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) act that the company based in Warsaw, with plants in Plymouth and North Carolina will officially cease operations.
The notice filed on Tuesday, states that Whitley â€ś...has decided to notify its employees that in light of its current financial situation Whitley will likely permanently cease its operations,â€ť and that â€ś...in the event of a cessation of operations all employees will be terminated.â€ť
While both Bremen and Culver Military finished short of a championship at last weekendâ€™s boys swim sectionals, both squads took home some pretty nice consolation prizes.
The Lions and the Eagles finished fourth and second at the Penn and Warsaw Sectionals, respectively, but both saw banner days for individuals, setting school records while grabbing multiple berths to this Fridayâ€™s 76th Annual IHSAA State Finals at the IUPUI Natatorium.
WALKERTON â€” John Glenn has announced golf coach Randy Schmeltz as the Falcon Award recipient for 2012.
The award will be presented at halftime of the boys basketball game against Penn Friday.
Schmeltz is in his 32nd year as an educator for the school corporation and is currently a physical education teacher at Urey Middle School, where he is the eighth grade girls basketball coach in addition to being the head coach of the Glenn High School boys and girls golf teams.
