Hurford wins 4th Rochester title, area teams advance 13 to semistate

February 4, 2013

ROCHESTER — Matt Hurford never figured that one day he would be the answer to a trivia question.
But there haven’t been many other four-time regional wrestling champs from Culver Community High School, that’s for sure.
If any.
“Yeah, I guess I am,” said Hurford, a senior 182-pounder, when asked about his accomplishment at Saturday’s Rochester mat regional. “That makes me feel good. I felt like I wrestled pretty well today.”
Of course, there aren’t many days when Hurford doesn’t wrestle well. He’s 40-0 this season.

CGA wins repeat crown at Warsaw Swim Sectional

February 4, 2013

WARSAW — Despite having one of the oldest programs in the state, Culver Girls Academy’s swim team had never won a sectional championship prior to last year.
Now the Lady Eagles can hang a pair of banners up in the historic James R. Lowenstine Pool.
After earning an impressive 20 berths to the finals at the Warsaw Sectional prelims Thursday, CGA avoided a letdown in Saturday’s championship round, cruising to a repeat title with 445 points ahead of host Warsaw’s 382.

The 38th Annual Girls State Basketball Tournament opens with sectionals this week, and area teams will divide up among three different tournament sites.
Plymouth, Culver Girls Academy and John Glenn will hit the road for New Prairie in Class 3A Sectional 19 action, while Bremen and LaVille travel to Central Noble for the Class 2A Sectional 35 tilt, and Oregon-Davis hosts a seven-team field in the Class A Sectional 51 tourney.

Pilgrims take tough road win at New Prairie

February 4, 2013

NEW CARLISLE — Crossing time zones may have created a little “jet lag” for Plymouth’s Pilgrims as they traveled for a tough non-conference game at New Prairie on Saturday, but they were able to revive in time to hold off the Cougars for a 72-56 win.
“We knew this would be a tough place to play; this was a tough weekend,” said Plymouth boss Ryan Bales. “We had two teams in New Prairie and Goshen that are physically tough and mentally tough — they play hard.”
To say the least.

No. 16 Plymouth gymnasts take fourth at Lakeland

February 4, 2013

LaGRANGE — Last year the Plymouth High School gymnastics team circled five meets at the start of the season as meets that they had specific goals for. They met those goals in four of the five. The one they didn’t was the Lakeland Invitational.
Since going to the invitational for the last five years it has been the worst meet of the season for the Pilgrims for some unknown reason. Saturday was their chance this year to break the curse, and it seemed as if the day was starting out like a typically bad one for the 16th-ranked Pilgrims.

Saint Joseph’s Health Center introduces electronic records

February 4, 2013

PLYMOUTH — Saint Joseph’s Health Center in downtown Plymouth began using an electronic medical records system Tuesday.
The clinic, which serves Marshall County residents who are uninsured or meet federal poverty guidelines, is the first office in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center system to use the program called Next Gen.
“Our other (locations) have electronic records, but they will be converting over to Next Gen,” said Ginger Hook, assistant director of clinical informatics for SJRMC Wednesday. “Saint Joseph Health Center is the first to have this.”
