Culver Military senior Anthony McHugh scored a second period nearfall against 138-pound No. 1-ranked Tommy Forte of Mishawaka in the finals of the Merrillville Wrestling Semistate Saturday. McHugh lost by a narrow 3-2 decision to finish runner-up at the meet and earn a spot out to the state finals next week.
Plymouth's Haley Harrell put up seven points in the fourth quarter to lead the Lady Pilgrims in a down-to-the-wire win over St. Joe Friday night and followed up with a team-high 10 points versus Marian in the New Prairie Sectional Championship Saturday.
NEW CARLISLE — After Friday night’s semifinal thrillers, Saturday’s New Prairie Sectional championship seemed like a bit of an anticlimax.
It sure didn’t feel that way to the Lady Pilgrims though.
No. 10 Plymouth used its signature brand of swarming man-to-man to hold Mishawaka Marian to 1 of 6 shooting in the first half en route to an 18-7 halftime lead, and the Lady Pilgrims’ pressure never let up in an eventual 38-21 sectional championship victory over the Knights.
HAMLET — That old adage about defense winning championships held for Oregon-Davis’ girls basketball team Saturday.
The Class A No. 2 Lady Cats switched up full-court and half-court defenses, restricted the scoring looks for Triton’s top shooters, and limited the No. 9 Trojans to 30 percent from the field in a 76-38 victory in the Class A Sectional 51 final at The Den.
MERRILLVILLE — Sometimes, rematches are a good thing, even when they don’t work out.
Ask Culver Academies senior Anthony McHugh, who is riding a momentum wave into next weekend’s state wrestling finals.
It’s not that he won a championship in the 138-pound weight class at Saturday’s Merrillville semistate tournament. Actually, he lost.
But in taking Mishawaka’s Tommy Forte down to the wire before dropping a 3-2 decision in the title bout, McHugh proved he may be ready to make a long run up the awards stand at the state meet.
