WALKERTON — LaVille’s boys basketball team put together quite a first-quarter stretch Saturday at John Glenn.
It paled in comparison to the streak the Lancers terminated.
Propelled by sophomore guard Blake Berger and a 17-1 rampage to open the battle, LaVille ended a 19-game winless streak covering nearly 16 years against the Falcons with a 52-36 Northern State Conference victory at The Aerie.
WALKERTON — Just consider the John Glenn Lady Falcons a rapid response team.
The Falcons, led by two triples apiece from Kyler Columbia, Carah Ochs and Natalie Shetler in the final 10 minutes of the game, quickly answered every LaVille second-half threat en route to a 65-46 Northern State Conference girls basketball victory at The Aerie Saturday.
With the victory — Glenn’s eighth straight — the Falcons doubled last season’s win total.

The Panthers poured in 13 3-pointers, and Argos lost a 73-23 rout at Pioneer Saturday.
Pioneer grabbed a comfortable 39-13 lead at halftime and coasted to the win over the Dragons, who haven’t won on the road since 2009.
Dominic Cataldo and Taylor Ogle scored five points each to lead Argos. Cataldo also finished with five rebounds, and Ogle notched a pair of steals in the loss, which dropped the Dragons to 1-5.

Olive Violet Beck
Nov. 29, 1926-Dec. 14, 2012
CULVER — Lifelong Culver resident Olive Violet Beck passed away Friday, Dec. 14 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Culver after an extended illness. She was surrounded by family members and her pastor. She was 86 years old.
A strong, sociable lady, Olive devoted herself to her family, her church and her community. She often joined her husband J.C. singing country and gospel songs, harmonizing sweetly in her soft country voice.
Leesa Sexton, 46, of Argos, and daughter Katelin Sexton, 10, were dead at the scene of a vehicle accident just after 6 p.m. Friday night, and Katelin's twin sister Sarah was airlifted to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, from which she has since been released with a minor injury.
Sexton's 2003 Ford Focus veered off U.S. 31 in Fulton County, where it was traveling south, just before re-entering the roadway and rolling several times. The accident took place south of 375 N., on the west side of the highway.

PLYMOUTH — Even after a slow start, Plymouth had chances to put the Panthers away.
But instead, NorthWood’s defense pestered the Class 3A No. 9 Pilgrims into 12 turnovers for 12 points in the final two frames, and the Panthers stole a 69-63 overtime win in a Northern Lakes Conference opener between undefeated teams Friday night at The Rock.
CULVER — Fact No. 1: Class A No. 3 Oregon-Davis dispatched Culver Girls Academy’s basketball team by a wide margin Friday night.
Fact No. 2: You might be hard-pressed to deduce Fact No. 1 from listening to the opposing coaches’ postgame reactions.
With CGA standout Andrijana Cvitkovic sidelined by a concussion, the visiting Lady Cats used a second-quarter spurt to shrug off a sluggish start and race past the Eagles 75-34 at Fleet Gymnasium but not necessarily inspire the boss.
BOURBON — The Triton Trojans defense came to play as they beat the New Prairie Cougars 51-27 in a Northern State Conference boys basketball tilt at the Trojan Trench Friday night.
It was a close game for most of the first half with Triton leading by only two at the end of the first quarter with the score 11-9. Both teams were still trying to figure out how best to stop the others’ offensive attack.
